Josephus' account of a war marked by treachery and atrocity is a superbly detailed and evocative record of the Jewish rebellion against Rome between AD 66 and 70. Originally a rebel leader, Josephus changed sides after he was captured to become a Rome-appointed negotiator, and so was uniquely placed to observe these turbulent events, from the siege of Jerusalem to the final heroic resistance and mass suicides at Masada. His account provides much of what we know about the history of the Jews under Roman rule, with vivid portraits of such key figures as the Emperor Vespasian and Herod the Great. Often self-justifying and divided in its loyalties, "The Jewish War" nevertheless remains one of the most immediate accounts of war, its heroism and its horrors, ever written.

An essential introduction to Josephus’s momentous war narrative The Jewish War is Josephus's superbly evocative account of the Jewish revolt against Rome, which was crushed in 70 CE with the siege of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Temple. Martin Goodman describes the life of this book, from its composition in Greek for a Roman readership to the myriad ways it touched the lives of Jews and Christians over the span of two millennia. The scion of a priestly Jewish family, Josephus became a rebel general at the start of the war. Captured by the enemy general Vespasian, Josephus predicted correctly that Vespasian would be the future emperor of Rome and thus witnessed the final stages of the siege of Jerusalem from the safety of the Roman camp and wrote his history of these cataclysmic events from a comfortable exile in Rome. His history enjoyed enormous popularity among Christians, who saw it as a testimony to the world that gave rise to their faith and a record of the suffering of the Jews due to their rejection of Christ. Jews were hardly aware of the book until the Renaissance. In the nineteenth century, Josephus's history became an important source for recovering Jewish history, yet Jewish enthusiasm for his stories of heroism—such as the doomed defense of Masada—has been tempered by suspicion of a writer who betrayed his own people. Goodman provides a concise biography of one of the greatest war narratives ever written, explaining why Josephus's book continues to hold such fascination today.

Josephus, soldier, statesman, historian, was a Jew born at Jerusalem about 37 CE. A man of high descent, he early became learned in Jewish law and Greek literature and was a Pharisee. After pleading in Rome the cause of some Jewish priests he returned to Jerusalem and in 66 tried to prevent revolt against Rome, managing for the Jews the affairs of Galilee. In the troubles which followed he made his peace with Vespasian. Present at the siege of Jerusalem by Titus, he received favours from these two as emperors and from Domitian and assumed their family name Flavius. He died after 97. As a historical source Josephus is invaluable. His major works are: History of the Jewish War, in seven books, from 170 BCE to his own time, first written in Aramaic but translated by himself into the Greek we now have; and Jewish Antiquities, in twenty books, from the creation of the world to 66 CE. The Loeb Classical Library edition of the works of Josephus also includes the autobiographical Life and his treatise Against Apion.

"The Wars of the Jews" is a historical work written by the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus in the late 1st century. Also known as "Jewish War" or "De Bello Judaico" in Latin, the book recounts the Jewish revolt against Roman rule, particularly focusing on the events leading to the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in 70 CE. Key aspects of the book include: Historical Context: Josephus provides a detailed account of the First Jewish-Roman War (66-73 CE), offering historical context and a chronological narrative of the events leading up to and during the conflict. Author's Background: Flavius Josephus was a Jewish general who, after being captured by the Romans, switched allegiances and became a historian and advisor to the Roman emperors. His works, including "The Wars of the Jews," reflect both his firsthand experiences and his perspective as a historian. Military Campaigns: The narrative delves into the military campaigns and battles that took place during the Jewish revolt. Josephus, having served as a military commander for the Jewish forces before his capture, provides insights into the strategies and tactics employed by both sides. Siege of Jerusalem: A significant portion of the work is dedicated to the siege of Jerusalem, which culminated in the destruction of the Second Temple. Josephus vividly describes the hardships faced by the inhabitants of the city and the escalating intensity of the conflict. Roman Perspective: While Josephus was a Jewish historian, his later allegiance to the Romans is evident in his narrative, providing a perspective that aligns with Roman interests. This aspect adds a layer of complexity to the interpretation of the events. Religious and Cultural Insights: "The Wars of the Jews" also delves into the religious and cultural aspects of the Jewish people during this tumultuous period. Josephus provides context for the motivations of the Jewish rebels and the socio-political dynamics that fueled the conflict. Historiographical Significance: Josephus' work is a crucial historical source for understanding the Jewish-Roman War and its aftermath. It provides valuable insights into the political, military, and religious dynamics of the time. Legacy: The book has had a lasting impact on historical scholarship and is considered an essential primary source for the study of the First Jewish-Roman War. Despite the challenges of interpreting Josephus's bias and motivations, his work remains a foundational text for understanding this critical period in Jewish and Roman history.
