Chaque année, les journées archéologiques de Haute-Normandie permettent la rencontre des différents acteurs de la recherche régionale, qu’ils soient professionnels ou bénévoles, et la restitution au public des récents travaux et opérations de terrain. Organisées par le ministère de la Culture et de la Communication – direction régionale des Affaires culturelles de Haute-Normandie, service régional de l’Archéologie, et le Centre de recherches archéologiques de Haute-Normandie (CRAHN), avec la collaboration du Conseil général de Seine-Maritime, elles se sont déroulées les 11 et 12 mai 2012 à l’Hôtel des sociétés savantes de Rouen. Les visites commentées du théâtre de Lillebonne, puis de l’abbaye de Jumièges les ont conclues le 13 mai. Au total ce sont vingt-trois contributions qui sont venues démontrer la vitalité de la recherche archéologique en Haute-Normandie. Celle-ci est favorisée par la pluralité des chercheurs, en archéologie programmée comme préventive, issus d’horizons variés : associations, universités, INRAP, collectivités (MADE, département de Seine-Maritime), structures de droit privé et bien sûr service régional de l’Archéologie. Ce dynamisme se concrétise également par la publication récente de monographies, comme celle du site paléolithique final du Buhot à Calleville, et de synthèses régionales, comme celle consacrée au haut Moyen Âge en Haute-Normandie.

Cinq thèmes ont été retenus en 2012: la Seine, axe de circulation et pôle d'attraction pour les sociétés humaines depuis la préhistoire; voir et percevoir, sujet qui a l'avantage de mettre en perspective l'histoire de la discipline; le quotidien, abordé par l'habitat et par les productions spécifiques comme la faïence; le monumental, dont le grand sanctuaire et le théâtre antiques du Vieil-Évreux, ainsi que le théâtre de Lillebonne sont emblématiques;le spirituel, représenté notamment par les abbayes de Mortemer et Saint-Taurin d'Évreux, qui viennent rappeler que l'archéologie ne se limite pas aux traces enfouies mais concerne aussi les vestiges en élévation par l'étude du bâti.
