Les 'douleurs d'après la, relation de la malade étaient extrèmement aiguës et pres que intolérables'; elles étaient tantôt brûlantes tantôt déchirantes tantôt 'lancinantes. Les accès, pendant, les premiers mois duraient quarante-huit heures consécutives _et ce qu'il y a de singulier ils cessaient précisément à la mème heure où ils avaient commencé, deux jours avant. Pendant ces accès madame J ne pouvait se tenir au lit; elle passait les nuits dans un fauteuil parce que son mal ne _lui per mettait pas d'appuyer sa téte, et ue d'ailleurs en essayant de se coucher, elle, eprouva1t un serrement violent à la gorge. Toutes les parties occupées par la douleur étaient d' une sensi bilite excessive et ne permettaient pas le moin dre attouchement; il y existait un trémousse ment convulsif; toute la face du côté malade devenait rouge; la rougeur'se répandait mème jusque sur le côté sain. Lors ue les accès se terminaient, la disparition de a douleur était aussi prompte qu'en avait été l - mvasion. Alors madame pour me servir de ses propres expressions n'était plus la' mème ersonne il y avait entre sa situation et cel e où elle avait été - nu instant avant la mème différence que celle qui existe entre l'état d'une personne bien portante et celui d'une autre qui est très malade. Dans les premiers temps, ces'accès ne revenaient que tous les mois et duraient alors, comme je l'ai dit pendant uarançe huit heures; ils revinrent ensuite tous esquinze jours mais ils étaient_aussî de la moitié moins longs. Quelques mois après madame éprouva des accès tous les huit jours, puis tous les'deux jours enfin presque tous les jours. A mesure qu'ils se rapprochaient ils diminu aient proportionnellement errlongueur mais l'intensité la violence de la douleur. Était toujours la mème.
