Excerpt from Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1920, Vol. 3 Up to approximately nine months of age we had not tested him with loud sounds. The test to determine whether a fear reaction could be called out by a loud sound was made when he was eight months, twenty-six days of age. The sound was that made by striking a hammer upon a suspended steel bar four feet in length and three-fourths of an inch in diameter. The laboratory notes are as follows. Excerpt from Journal of Experimental Psychology, Vol. 5 Records were made during the first year upon a kymograph with the Jaquet marker registering time in one-second periods. During the second year a foot-pierson telegraph recorder was substituted for the kymograph and a pendulum with electric contacts was used, in place of the Jaquet. It also registered in one-second periods. In reading the records the right and wrong reactions were first grouped into five-second, periods for analysis. As it is impractical to give the actual records, two Specimens for eight minutes' work are given in Chart I. These were selected from the work of subject G who showed a greater variation in his reactions than any other subject. Four items are of importance in every record: the averages for the right and the wrong reactions and the variation from these averages. Chart I. Illustrates these features. The average Of right reactions per five-second period on the eighth day is as compared with for the fourth, while the average for wrong reactions has risen on the fourth day to 8 5 from that of 33 for the eighth day. Moreover the variations from the averages has noticeably increased in the records of the fourth day. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The American Journal of Psychology, 1920, Vol. 31 We are confronted by the shocking situation that a proposition is triumphantly borne out by an immense indirect experience and that it can be proved neither by mathematical deduction nor by direct experience. Urban, however, did attempt to prove it by showing, under the conditions of the psychophysical experiment, that positive and negative errors of observation, measured from the point of subjective equality, are equal.20 Faith in the principle was established, however, long before psychophysics furnished this justification. Excerpt from The Journal of Applied Psychology, 1920, Vol. 4 The preliminary work at the factory fell into two parts, getting personally oriented and getting in the proper rapport with those in authority. It was necessary at the outset to become familiar with the different types of work carried on at the factory and to learn the technical terminology. This knowledge was necessary for later analysis of the mental fac tors involved in various factory Operations. One of the assistants to the Factory Superintendent was detailed as aide to the writer, - conducting him about the factory, explaining the work and introducing him to various foremen so that it was possible to get acquainted and talk over the mental and physical qualifications for various kinds of work. A further study was made of the methods of accounting, time study and evaluating piece-work. These facts were of value in getting production ratings of men who were tested, and following up new workers. Data were secured on labor turnover to see what departments apparently needed the most attention. It was necessary, also, to become familiar with the executive organization in order to know to whom to go for information or to get various things done. The British Psychological Society's contributions to psychological research are memorialized in The British Journal of Psychology, 1910, Vol. 3. The British Psychological Society (BPS) is a representative body for psychologists and psychology in the United Kingdom. The BPS maintains several journals which publish psychological studies. The British Journal of Psychology, 1910, Vol. 3 is a good example of the rigorous standards professionals must adhere to in order to be published by a peer-reviewed journal. The compilation of scholarly articles covers many different topics of interest to researchers. The articles follow research guidelines, setting forth the subject to be studied, presenting the methodology of the study, presenting the results and making general conclusions. A few of the articles deserve special attention. "Natural History of Experience" by C. Lloyd Morgan argued for a non-reductive view of human psychological abilities, viewing human experience in the widest sense. Morgan was arguing against psychologists who were in thrall to the eugenics movement. "The Colour Preferences of School Children" presents extensive research on the colour preferences of children of both sexes as they age. It concludes that colour preferences are strongly red and yellow but begin to change as the children age and develop intellectually. There is some evidence that colour preference is a function of intellectual development rather than age, but further studies were needed to know whether colour teaching could truly affect intellectual capacity. Although some of the equations presented alongside the research may seem complicated at first, the results of the studies are not. A general readership can definitely understand the theories, tests and results presented by The British Journal of Psychology, 1910, Vol. 3.
