Excerpt from Journal of the New-York Microscopical Society, 1892, Vol. 8 For some as yet unexplained reason, multiplication by fission sooner or later results in an exhaustion of the vital powers, which would lead to a rupture of the line of descent if it were not for the introduction at this point of the phenomena of conjugation, which, in some mysterious way, give fresh impetus to the repro ductive energy. This new departure is brought about by the merging of two organisms into one and the formation from their combined substance of an enlarged and reinvigorated mother cell, called a zygospore, which becomes the progenitor of a new family, descending from it by the original process of self-division. But the exact nature and office of the zygospore are enveloped in great uncertainty, which has been deepened rather than eluci dated by a good deal of hasty inference which has been put upon record as established fact. Thus, it has been asserted that two zygospores sometimes arise from a single union, and also that conjugation results in the production of a sporangial frustule, which undergoes in itself a segmentation which ends in the for mation of true spores, which are set free by the rupture of the containing envelope and which then establish large numbers of new centres of diatom-life. These and other reputed phases of the reproductive process rest upon observations which are more than doubtful, but even if they shall be at last accepted as true, the entire matter will still be found to be reducible to modes of gemmation, either continuous or discontinuous. As has been indicated already, the medium through which the vital forces work out their wonderful effects is the internal proto plasmic substance of the diatom, otherwise known as the endo1891] new-york microscopical society. Excerpt from Journal of the New-York Microscopical Society, 1893, Vol. 9 What investigations I was able to make confirmed a good many of Allman's illustrations. But I found two points of difference, otherwise the Society would have been spared a narration of my experiences. One point of difference relates to the general position of the tentacula, which were Spread in all directions and presented a free, wavy appearance, as in C. Taramaz'd. As shown by Allman see April journal, plate 3o - they stand almost vertical, whilst in my solitary specimen, exhibited November 6th, 1891, they 'stood out like wires from a telegraph pole. Some few specimens which I was able to retain up to ten days ago had the same free, wavy appearance. Allman's presentation, however, may have been an accidental difference, produced by exceptional environ ments, and I do not lay much stress upon the point. Excerpt from Journal of the New-York Microscopical Society, 1887, Vol. 3 The tangential sections will show the ommatidia, as these might be seen, by lookin g directly into the compound eye from its outer surface, and consequently, and as a general rule, especially in the central region of each slice. They will give more or less exact transverse sections of these ommatidia. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Journal of the New-York Microscopical Society, 1885, Vol. 1 In many kinds of pollen, the grains, when immersed in water, soon distend to bursting, discharging the contents. In Others, and in most fresh pollen, when placed in ordinarily aer ated water, at least when this is slightly thickened by syrup or the like, and submitted to a congenial temperature, a projection of the inner coat through the outer appears at some one point, and by a kind of germination grows into a slender tube, which may even attain two or three hundred tinies the diameter of the grain and the richer protoplasmic contents tend to accumulate at the farther and somewhat enlarging extremity of this pollen tube. Commonly the pollen remains unaltered until it is placed upon the stigma. The more or less viscid moisture of this incites a similar growth, and also doubt less nourishes it; and the protruding tube at once penetrates the stigma, and by gliding between its loose cells buries itself in the tissue Of the style, descending thence to the interior Of the ovary and at length to the ovules. Fertilization is accomplished by the action of this pollen-tube upon the ovule, and upon a special formation within it. Excerpt from The Journal of Microscopy and Natural Science, 1889, Vol. 8: The Journal of the Postal Microscopical Society I think we may fairly congratulate ourselves upon the marked improvement in the character of our boxes resulting from the alteration Of the Rules, whereby each member is called upon to contribute from six to twelve slides simultaneously, together with accompanying notes, for instead of a heterogeneous collection of unconnected slides as heretofore, we have now, for the most part, connected series bearing upon one and the same subject, which thus receives a much fuller elucidation than was otherwise possible, and is more calculated to elicit notes of greater value. As regards these, however, there still seems to be much to be desired, for while according a full meed Of praise to the excellent notes and admirable drawings that accompany a number of the boxes, there are frequently others with which they are Of a very meagre and insufficient character, or sometimes entirely omitted, such boxes making the round Of the various circuits without either giving or acquiring much information that is of any value - for the three evenings allowed to each member for the examination of the slides and the addition of notes must necessarily be very insuffi cient, Where members like myself have their time usually fully occupied. It may, then, be worth while to consider whether this state Of things may not be in some measure obviated. Having had occasion to visit Bath (the headquarters of our Society) at the commencement of the present year, I took the opportunity to suggest to our excellent Secretary what appeared to me as likely to lead to a considerable improvement in this respect, viz., the formation of what may be called Correspondence Circles amongst our various members, whereby such as are working at the same or allied subjects Should be brought into communication with each other, irrespective of the ordinary circu lation of slides as at present existing. The work of each member should be submitted to the other members of their special circle for comment and friendly criticism, and by judicious questions and replies a much larger amount Of valuable information would be elicited than seems to be at present practicable.
