Journalism ethics is a branch of philosophy concerned with the actions that are morally permissible and those that are not. In Journalism, ethics is important because it controls what gets published. Media ethics help media workers in deciding what is right, and how to choose the best from several alternatives. "Media ethics" constitutes a normative science of conduct and must therefore apply voluntarily, whereas abiding by the "media law" is compulsory. This book is based on a survey study about journalism ethics in Malaysia - developing country located in South-East Asia. The main objective of this book is to determine the relationship between journalists' ethical knowledge, attitude and their possible ethical behavior. The role of experience, education and gender in ethical decision making is also discussed. The priority between media law and journalism ethics is another part of this book. In this regard, two theoretical models of thoughts (Separate model and Correspondence model) are reviewed to reveal the Malaysian journalists' attitude towards the Social Responsibility theory.

Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this analysis of media law in Malaysia surveys the massively altered and enlarged legal landscape traditionally encompassed in laws pertaining to freedom of expression and regulation of communications. Everywhere, a shift from mass media to mass self-communication has put enormous pressure on traditional law models. An introduction describing the main actors and salient aspects of media markets is followed by in-depth analyses of print media, radio and television broadcasting, the Internet, commercial communications, political advertising, concentration in media markets, and media regulation. Among the topics that arise for discussion are privacy, cultural policy, protection of minors, competition policy, access to digital gateways, protection of journalists’ sources, standardization and interoperability, and liability of intermediaries. Relevant case law is considered throughout, as are various ethical codes. A clear, comprehensive overview of media legislation, case law, and doctrine, presented from the practitioner’s point of view, this book is a valuable time-saving resource for all concerned with media and communication freedom. Lawyers representing parties with interests in Malaysia will welcome this very useful guide, and academics and researchers will appreciate its value in the study of comparative media law.

Closely organized around the Society of Professional Journalists' code of ethics -- the news industry's widely accepted "gold standard" of journalism principles -- this updated edition uses real-life case studies to demonstrate how journalism students and professionals can identify and reason through ethical dilemmas. Stressing the cross-platform viability of basic ethical principles, this study features a wide selection of case studies penned by professional journalists-including several new additions-that offer examples of thoughtful, powerful, and principled reporting. Cases where regrettable decisions have taught important lessons are also included, providing a new template for analyzing moral predicaments.
