Tracing the history of media in the English speaking Caribbean, this book provides insight into the development of these industries from their inception under British imperial rule to their current focus on advancing national development in the post-independence period. The influence of US media on media content and cultural tastes, and the lingering effects of colonialism on media are also investigated, drawing on globalization theories of hybridity. Interviews with journalists, editors, and media owners in English speaking Caribbean countries provide firsthand insight into the profession and practice of journalism in the region, highlighting the social and cultural context in which the media industries operate. Additionally, this book describes the current economic success of Caribbean journalism and the factors driving its new trends. His award-winning career has spanned five decades and has taken him from life-changing issues on an Indian reservation in Montana to helping stop illegal dumping of sewage sludge in Tennessee. He taught journalism for a brief time in Montana and has always loved the art of writing. His hero is journalist Ernie Pyle, who helped lift the spirit of a nation. He has four children, Lara, Lindsay, Christopher and Price. He currently lives in Mariposa, California, with his wife Nicole and his son, Price. This edited volume documents the changes taking place in local community practices globally. Digital technologies and globalization have forced evolutions in how we go about producing and consuming journalism, and these essays empirically and theoretically advance the scholarly conversations about those trends. What does it mean to serve the information needs of a community in a digitized social world where so many of our ties – weak and strong – are at least partially maintained in virtual worlds? With authors and data from all over the world, this work celebrates a fundamental connectedness to citizens and their community and renews the emphasis on home as a mandate for any locally focused news organization. The contributions to this volume explore the "flows" within both digital spaces and geographic places that are an important foreground to any conversation about what is community today. Several terms are coined and explored in the volume, including "geosocial journalism" and "reciprocal journalism" that account for the essentiality of information sharing in global public realms to inspire feelings of community belonging. Other chapters include a review of Patch.com – one of the largest grassroots, digital platforms for journalism – a survey of how Norwegian community media organizations are adapting to digital worlds, how Swedish citizen sites operate, and the ethics of community journalists to advocate for their citizenry regarding digital matters. Venturing towards both optimism and dismay, the collection argues that understandings of communal borders have expanded. So even if journalists cannot reach the current locals (such as in Africa as one chapter relates) or globally transient locals, digital technologies can help relocate fractured community into a less problematic, virtual space. This requires commitment on the part of both journalists and citizens to preserve those connections, utilize those technologies, and exercise those fundamental principles of community journalism that go back more than half a century. While traditional print media has long played a vital role in the circulation of political rhetoric, scant attention has been paid to minor market newspapers that service the populations of small rural towns. These papers, soon to be fully supplanted by electronic media, offer a unique window into the politics of rural communities, which during the Trump administration have been understood as the wellspring of virulent conservatism and populism. This project identifies and establishes newspapers published by Main Street Media as a unique and fertile archive for this sort of analysis. Main Street Media is the parent company of thirty-three newspapers that service small farm town markets in Kansas, Nebraska, and Missouri. To focus on the divisive political rhetoric surrounding crime, violence, and immigration, this project concentrates specifically on the opinion and politician statement sections of the three Main Street Media properties (Red Cloud Chief, Smith County Pioneer, and The Santa Fe Times) published in Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri, respectively. With a sampling frame of January 2015 through January 2017, I capture both the end of the Obama presidency and the sequence of narratives leading into the Trump presidency. This strategy yields a sample of 729 unique opinion/political statement pieces. The aim of this project is to better understand the place of small-market newspapers as an ongoing site for the circulation of political rhetoric in the context of proliferating electronic, new media such as Facebook and Twitter, and to theorize editorial writers as key political actors in this milieu. The findings of this research show a significant use of the far-right populist narrative in these journalists' responses to ongoing national and international cultural debate and support of politicians who adhere to this worldview. Implications for policy responses are also discussed.
