Es wurden'tausende von Menschen mehr reisen, und viele Tausende, die jetzt schon reisen, wurden einen viel hoheren Genuss haben. Leider wird es aber wohl noch viele Jahrzehnte dauern, bis man sich zu dem praktischen Sinn der Amerikaner aufschwingt. Am Publikum aber liegt es, wenn es sich die Vorteile der amerikanischen Gepackbei'orderung nicht bald verschafft. Es muss es sich eben nicht weiter gefallen lassen, so behan delt zu werden, wie dies von seiten der deutschen Eisenbahnverwaltungen geschieht; es muss Protest erheben und dafur sorgen, dass diesem auch ener giseh Nachdruck in den Parlamenten gegeben wird. Auf den amerikanischen Eisenbahnen hat jeder Reisende 150 Pfund Gepack frei; nur auf den Pacific bahnen werden 100 Pfund Freigepack bewilligt. Von kleinlicher Verwiegung aber ist auf keiner amerika nischen Bahn die Rede. Das Gepack wird einfach geschatzt, und wenn es anstatt 150 Pfund 180 oder 200 wiegt, so fallt es keinem Eisenbahnbeamten ein, deshalb Einspruch zu erheben. Sieht man, dass der Reisende wirklich nur Passagiergut bei sich hat und eine grosse Reise unternehmen will, so sagt man ihm auch kein Wort, wenn er selbst 250 Pfund Ge pack mit sich fuhrt. Man spediert ohne jedes Ent gelt, denn man weiss, der Reisende braucht das Ge pack ebenso notwendig wie irgend einen Korperteil. This book challenges the idea that Western media systems are becoming more American in the digital age, arguing that journalistic cultures are not only significantly different from each other still but also variably open and resistant to change. Drawing upon extensive field research of political reporters and examination of discourses of journalistic professionalism as well institutional analysis, this book finds that occupational norms and values of journalism in the US are vigorously upheld but in fact relatively porous and malleable. In Germany, by contrast, professional boundaries are rather strong and resilient but treated matter-of-factly. Revers argues that this is both a consequence of institutional arrangements of media systems and historically evolved cultural principles of journalism in both countries which mutually constitute each other.

The moral and political role of German journalists before, during, and after the Nazi dictatorship Journalists between Hitler and Adenauer takes an in-depth look at German journalism from the late Weimar period through the postwar decades. Illuminating the roles played by journalists in the media metropolis of Hamburg, Volker Berghahn focuses on the lives and work of three remarkable individuals: Marion Countess Dönhoff, distinguished editor of Die Zeit; Paul Sethe, “the grand old man of West German journalism”; and Hans Zehrer, editor in chief of Die Welt. All born before 1914, Dönhoff, Sethe, and Zehrer witnessed the Weimar Republic’s end and opposed Hitler. When the latter seized power in 1933, they were, like their fellow Germans, confronted with the difficult choice of entering exile, becoming part of the active resistance, or joining the Nazi Party. Instead, they followed a fourth path—“inner emigration”—psychologically distancing themselves from the regime, their writing falling into a gray zone between grudging collaboration and active resistance. During the war, Dönhoff and Sethe had links to the 1944 conspiracy to kill Hitler, while Zehrer remained out of sight on a North Sea island. In the decades after 1945, all three became major figures in the West German media. Berghahn considers how these journalists and those who chose inner emigration interpreted Germany’s horrific past and how they helped to morally and politically shape the reconstruction of the country. With fresh archival materials, Journalists between Hitler and Adenauer sheds essential light on the influential position of the German media in the mid-twentieth century and raises questions about modern journalism that remain topical today.
