The extraordinary story of the first two women to cross Antarctica The fascinating chronicle of Liv Arnesen and Ann Bancroft’s dramatic journey as the first two women to cross Antarctica, No Horizon Is So Far follows the explorers from the planning of their expedition through their brutal trek from the Norwegian sector all the way to McMurdo Station as they walked, skied, and ice-sailed for almost three months in temperatures reaching as low as -35°F, all while towing their 250-pound supply sledges across 1,700 miles of ice full of dangerous crevasses. Through website transmissions and satellite phone calls, Ann and Liv, two former schoolteachers, were able to broadcast their expedition to more than three million students in sixty-five countries to teach geography, science, and the importance of following your dreams.

Beyond The Horizon written by Colin Angus and has been published by Anchor Canada this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-02-12 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

In June, 2004, Colin Angus left Vancouver on his bicycle. Nearly two years later, he rolled back in, looking like a castaway, and having completed the first human-powered circumnavigation of the globe. Angus cycled, skiied, and rowed a route that took him to Alaska, across the Bering Sea and the Siberian winter, across Europe from Moscow to Portugal, then across the Atlantic to Costa Rica–a 156-day rowing odyssey. From there it was a short 8,300 kilometre ride back to Vancouver. Along the way he burned through 4,000 chocolate bars, 72 inner tubes, 250 kgs of freeze-dried foods, 31 dorado fish (caught from the sea), 2 offshore rowboats, 4 bicycles, 80 kgs of clothing. And he showed the world that if he can travel 43,000 kilometres without polluting the planet, then the rest of us can get off our butts, and clean up our own acts. “We lay in the rowboat cabin as the seas swelled and the sky boiled like a devil’s cauldron. Slanting yellow sun beams cut between black squalls, and corrugated cirrus clouds interlaced the remaining areas of blue. Huge anvil heads roiled and billowed, like slow-moving atomic explosions. Flashes of lightning illuminated the IMAX screen of the horizon. Such energy and volatility would have been breathtakingly beautiful, if we had been watching from nearly anywhere else, and if it weren’t for the fact that it was all just a prelude to a killer storm. It was hard to believe that yet another tropical cyclone was heading our way. We had chosen the worst hurricane season in recorded history to make our five-month, 10,000 km unsupported rowboat crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. Now, two months into our voyage, it looked very likely our expedition might come to an abrupt end. Our voyage across the Atlantic was only a part of a much larger expedition: an attempt to complete the first human-powered circumnavigation of the planet. So far we had trekked, skied, cycled, canoed, and rowed non-stop across three continents and were half-way across our second ocean. Now, as I huddled in the dog-house sized cabin with my fiancée waiting for the Hurricane Epsilon to reach us, I cursed myself for ever believing I could achieve such an impossible quest.” —From Beyond the Horizon

Home On The Horizon written by Sally Bayley and has been published by Peter Lang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with American literature categories.

In this study of space and place, Sally Bayley examines the meaning of 'home' in American literature and culture. Moving from the nineteenth-century homestead of Emily Dickinson to the present-day reality of Bob Dylan, Bayley investigates the relationship of the domestic frontier to the wide-open spaces of the American outdoors. In contemporary America, she argues, the experience of home is increasingly isolated, leading to unsettling moments of domestic fallout. At the centre of the book is the exposed and often shifting domain of the domestic threshold: Emily Dickinson's doorstep, Edward Hopper's doors and windows, and Harper Lee's front porch. Bayley tracks these historically fragile territories through contemporary literature and film, including Cormac McCarthy's No Country For Old Men, Lars Von Trier's Dogville, and Andrew Dominik's The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford - works that explore local, domestic territories as emblems of nation. The culturally potent sites of the american home - the hearth, porch, backyard, front lawn, bathroom, and basement - are positioned in relation to the more conflicted sites of the American motel and hotel.

The Q document—source of the Synoptic Gospels—has long been a mystery. A rumor. A myth. Its pages could threaten the meaning of life and shake the foundations of the world’s major religions—but its existence had never been proved. Until now. In ancient Cappadocia, legends and parables speak of a divine stream, bubbling up from within the earth. Mateo, as guardian of the stream, hears its call and deciphers its secrets. In the present day, Farah, hoping to lighten her dark thoughts, journeys to a Pacific island, only to find herself drawn to a mysterious book. Will it hold the answers she seeks or plunge her into a battle for her life and soul? To Rose, anyone who is not a devout Christian is suspicious, dangerous, and bound for hell. Her son Roger, a theological archeologist, is creeping dangerously close to that fate. Roger has uncovered a buried scroll in modern-day Turkey—a scroll that suggests the document at the root of Judeo-Christian belief was grossly misunderstood, that the politically influenced faith systems that canonized the gospels got it wrong. The Q document could tear humanity apart. Should it be shared with all mankind to return human spiritual awareness to its purest form? Or should it be destroyed? Meticulously researched and based on historical truth, Abwûn speaks eloquently to the power of religion to uplift but also to harm, as it leads us through an electrifying unfolding capable of changing the way we view the world, religion—and ourselves.

Imagine the North American Indians as astronomers carefully watching the heavens, charting the sun through the seasons, or counting the sunrises between successive lumar phases. Then imagine them establishing observational sites and codified systems to pass their knowledge down through the centuries and continually refine it. A few years ago such images would have been abruptly dismissed. Today we are wiser. Living the Sky describes the exciting archaeoastronomical discoveries in the United States in recent decades. Using history, science, and direct observation, Ray A. Williamson transports the reader into the sky world of the Indians. We visit the Bighorn Medicine Wheel, sit with a Zuni sun priest on the winter solstice, join explorers at the rites of the Hopis and the Navajos, and trek to Chaco Canyon to make direct on-site observations of celestial events.
