This rich collection of accounts explores the personal and professional experiences of palliative care workers. Contributors from a variety of disciplines associated with care at the end of life - among them social workers, a nurse, a doctor, a counselling psychologist, an academic researcher, a psychotherapist and a creative writing therapist - explain how and why they came to work in palliative care, what they bring to the work and the ways in which it has enriched their own lives. Including descriptive examples of their work with clients and families, they discuss the spiritual needs of patients, how to manage personal boundaries and power relations, the use of narrative and story telling in care work and the impact of working with people who are very ill and grieving on every day life. This thoughtful and positive book presents a variety of experience-based perspectives on working in palliative care. Emphasising the use of self and the importance of reflective practice in professional work, this book will be of relevance to all professionals in medical and social care who want to gain a deeper understanding of their work and of the motivation underlying it.

With Aotearoa New Zealand’s increasing diversity and ageing population demographics, the need for social workers to be trained to work in palliative care practice is becoming increasingly necessary. This study advances understanding of palliative care social work and its implications for education, training and practice from a practitioner’s point of view. This study used a constructivist case study approach to capture in-depth and rich data from social work practitioners about their pathways and practice, including assessment and development of practice. Purposive and snowballing sampling were employed and 12 individual, semi-structured interviews and a focus group with 5 participants were conducted. The findings showed that most participants were led to their current work through a sense of embeddedness in their career and personal experiences of loss and grief. In particular, the findings signalled how considerations of the past, present, and future inform palliative social work: journeys to palliative care, mobilising social work practice, and sustaining support. I employed the participants’ voices to show how these three parts works together to illustrate current social work practice in palliative care and its implications from personal, pedagogical, and professional perspectives. The findings also showed participants’ palliative care exposure in the tertiary curriculum were mostly limited and post-qualifying professional development opportunities were often sought. Participants did not articulate one specific standardised assessment tool – these varied between practitioners depending on the service in which the social worker worked. In light of these findings, I maintain that, to sustain good social work practice, support from the wider team and education are important and self-care is vital. I recommend further educational emphasis, adapting a guiding NZ-based palliative care social work assessment tool to be pursued in the future to improve the professional encounters associated with death and dying.

`The combined practice area of the contributors to this book include social work, psychotherapy, sociology, counselling psychology, creative writing, nursing, and medicine. Several of the authors have multiple professions, and have come to palliative care later in their careers. Indeed, the combined skill of this group is impressive. Each chapter is unique and each story worthy in its own right. The commonalities are remarkable also. I recommend it to all palliative care professionals, when feeling a little-jaded about what we are doing and being swept along with the winds of changing technology and evidenced based practice, and to other health-care workers who feel an inclination to bring a little humanity to their care'. -Omega Vol 51 (1) 77-86, 2005 `This book offers unique way of looking at caring for palliative parents by using the influence of the self. It also offers an opportunity for reflection how our experiences can enrich the experience of patient's faced with the prospect of dying. Professionals who enjoy reading stories will thoroughly enjoy this book.' -International Journal of Palliative Nursing `In a way it is surprising that palliative care has not produced more books like this: collections in which those engaged in the daily work of caring for dying and bereaved people share something of their motivations for entering this particular world, their experiences along the way, and their reasons for staying in or quitting it…Christina Mason was right to embark on this project. She has edited a book that deserves to be widely read.' -Palliative Medicine 2003 `This is a delightful book. Although its focus is on professionals working in specialist palliative care, it would be useful for any practitioner wanting to learn more about reflective practice or their motivations for caring.' - Journal of Community Nursing This rich collection of accounts explores the personal and professional experiences of palliative care workers. For more than two decades, hospice nurse Maggie Callanan has tended to the terminally ill and been a cornerstone of support for their loved ones. Now the coauthor of the classic bestseller Final Gifts passes along the lessons she has learned from the experts—her patients. Here is the guide we all need to understanding the special needs of the dying and those who care for them. In her work with thousands of families, Maggie Callanan has witnessed the tears, the love—and the confusion and conflict—this final passage can evoke. Now, with honesty, compassion, and even humor, she empowers patients and their families to write the last chapter of their lives with less fear, less pain, and more control—so that all involved can focus their energies on creating the best possible ending. From supporting a husband or wife faced with the loss of a spouse, to helping a dying mother prepare her children to carry on without her, Callanan’s poignant stories illustrate new ways to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges of this difficult and precious time. She brings welcome clarity to medical and ethical concerns, explaining what to expect at every stage. Each brief chapter also conveys a home truth about making crucial treatment decisions, supporting the patient’s dignity and individuality, and lightening the burden on caregivers. Final Journeys is designed to be your companion, resource, and advocate. Living Well With A Serious Illness written by Robin Bennett Kanarek and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-04-04 with Family & Relationships categories.

A practical guide for understanding how palliative care can improve quality of life for patients and their caregivers. Robin Bennett Kanarek was a registered nurse working with patients suffering from chronic medical conditions when her ten-year-old son was diagnosed with leukemia. As her son endured grueling treatments, Robin realized how often medical professionals overlook critical psychological, emotional, and spiritual support for people with life-threatening illnesses. Living Well with a Serious Illness is the culmination of decades of Robin's work to advance the field of palliative care. Although palliative care is often associated with hospice and end-of-life planning, Kanarek argues for a more expanded definition that incorporates palliative care earlier in patients' journeys. Living Well with a Serious Illness helps patients and their caregivers understand • what palliative care entails • how to access the support they need when going through a serious illness • what questions to ask medical professionals • how to navigate advanced care planning • definitions of common terminology used with end-of-life planning • the importance of spiritual care, coping strategies, and emotional support • how to become an advocate for palliative care This book illuminates the importance of seeing patients as individuals who can benefit from care for their body, mind, and spirit—the core tenet of palliative care.
