Su padre, don Francisco, fue un caballero ilustre de aquella tierra muy aficionado a los buenos estudios, docto en humanidades y amante de su patria. Dona Francisca Jove Ramirez, su madre, se nora de extremada hermosura y de mayor virtud, cuido de inspirar a sus hijos en los primeros anos de la vida los sentimientos religiosos que tanto ayudaron a non Gasrsn, andando el tiempo, a sufrir con resignacion las desgracias que, como espantoso Dll? Bledo, se desplomaron sobre su cabeza. Aun por entonces la impiedad yla falta de toda creencia no habian emponzonado el corazon de los espanoles; todavia no era moda en nuestra patria dudar de todo, burlarse de todo, querer reemplazar los milagros de la fe con los delirios de la razon. La madre de Jovsu.mos era el tipo de las damas espa nolas religiosas y creyentes, educaban a sus hijos en las verdades de la santa reli gion; y cuando salian de sus brazos para entregarse al estudio de las ciencias, 6 al cultivo de las letras, 6 al manejo de las armas si eran varones, o para contraer ma trimonio, si eran hembras llevaban grabados en el pecho los principios eternos de vir tud de honor verdadero, de caridad y de temor de Dios, que saben inspirar las muje res cristianas y que jamas abandonaron a nuestro don gaspar. Mas de una vez en sus grandes tribulaciones, el ministro de Carlos IV y el miembro de la Junta Central que goberno los reinos de E3pana en la cautividad de Fernando VII tuvo ocasion de re cordar aquellas maximas santas y preciosas con que su buena madre templo su alma elevada antes de entregarle a los peligros del mundo; alguna vez le parecieron a Jova u.uvos de mas subido precio que los bienes de fortuna que heredo de sus padres que por otra parte no serian muchos, porque fueron nueve los hijos de aquel feliz matri monio. Tan dilatada familia no podia menos de preocupar vivamente el animo previsor de unos padres carinosos, y contando con las excelentes disposiciones que mostraba nos Gssmn, con su precoz inteligencia, docilidad y buena indole, resolvieron dedi carle a la Iglesia, para que libre de todo otro lazo, pudiera servir de amparo a sus hermanos, y muy particularmente a las hembras pues siendo cuatro, no seria extrano que alguna menos dichosa hubiese menester el arrimo y seguro apoyo de persona tan allegada. Con este tin, despues de haber aprendido primeras letrasy latinidad en Gijon y filosofia en Oviedo, paso en edad de trece anos ala universidad de Avila, donde em prendio la carrera de leyes y canones bajo la inmediata solicitud del prelado. De aquella diocesis don Romualdo Velarde y Cienfuegos, gran protector de sus paisanos, que habia convertido el palacio episcopal en una especie de seminario de los hijos de Asturias. Encantaron al Obispo el talento, la viveza y la aplicacion del nuevo alumno; y deseoso de estimular sus progresos, le confirio la institucion canonica de dos bene ficios. Mas adelante, contemplandole con su carrera concluida y ya licenciado en em bos derechos, creyo reducido campo a la capacidad y al saber de su protegido los li mites de aquel palacio y provincia, y proporcionandole una beca en el colegio mayor de San Ildefonso, dispuso su traslaciou a la ciudad de Alcala de Henares cuya uni versidad era centro de dctrina, escuela de sabios plantel de Operarios entendidos para las diversas carreras del Estado.
