Em 1865, chegou a Jaicós, no interior do Piauí, a notícia de que o Governo brasileiro recrutava voluntários para lutar na Guerra do Paraguai. Ali, a cearense Jovita Alves Feitosa, de dezessete anos, decidiu alistar-se, vestindo-se de homem. Seu desejo era ir a campo vingar as mulheres brasileiras maltratadas pelos paraguaios no Mato Grosso. Descoberto o disfarce, Jovita foi, ainda assim, aceita como voluntária pelo presidente da província, no posto de segundo-sargento. Transformada em celebridade do dia para a noite, fez um percurso triunfal de Teresina ao Rio de Janeiro. Mas, por fim, a Secretaria da Guerra recusou sua incorporação como combatente: às mulheres cabia somente o trabalho voluntário como enfermeiras. Frustrada, Jovita voltou a Teresina, mas acabou retornando ao Rio de Janeiro, onde passou a viver como prostituta. Reapareceu nos noticiários em 1867, ao suicidar-se com uma punhalada no coração. A razão imediata teria sido a partida do amante galês para a Inglaterra. Depois de longo silêncio, nos últimos 25 anos o nome de Jovita reapareceu em livros que mesclam mito e realidade. A prostituição e a morte por suicídio de certa forma desapareceram do imaginário nacional e para muitos ela morreu em batalha. Sua memória foi também recuperada como heroína da luta das mulheres pela igualdade de direitos. Em dezembro de 2018, Jovita foi oficialmente inscrita no Panteão dos Heróis da Pátria. Em Jovita Alves Feitosa: voluntária da pátria, voluntária da morte, José Murilo de Carvalho, um dos maiores historiadores em atividade no país, reproduz e analisa preciosos documentos de época, que compõem um quadro rico e complexo. Estão reproduzidas uma pequena biografia datada de 1865 (que inclui uma entrevista com Jovita), notícias de jornal, um depoimento dado à polícia, o atestado de óbito, diversos poemas escritos em sua homenagem, fotografias. Estudando os limites entre fato e mito, o autor busca entender os sonhos e a luta da voluntária — e as relações que se estabeleceram entre ela e a sociedade de seu tempo. Ao ser alçada a heroína da pátria, comparada a Joana d'Arc, Jovita foi elemento agregador. Mas também foi força desagregadora, ao subverter o papel atribuído à mulher em uma sociedade patriarcal. Se foi exaltada como mulher pública no sentido cívico, foi também criticada como mulher pública no sentido moral predominante na época. Hiding in Plain Sight: Women Warriors throughout Time and Space takes the many, long-standing dimensions of military history, including the various modalities of warfare across cultures and periods, and integrates them with the more recent and very substantial contributions of social history, women’s history, black history, feminist theory, LGBTQ community, and other perspectives. By providing an extensive annotated bibliography of the new findings, the work provides the reader with an exciting compilation of new knowledge placed within a longstanding military historical framework, one which provides a broader study and understanding of warfare into which to put the very recent, disparate findings culled from many disciplines. The book reaffirms that women have long been deeply embedded in the practice of warfare, not simply as victims or minor curiosities, but as important actors—tactically, strategically, in combat, and directing warfare from afar—just as their male counterparts. The concomitant amalgam also shows that certain types and patterns of warfare such as the defense of castles and fortresses, commanding a ship or a fleet, revolutionary warfare, and today’s drone and cyber-forms of warfare have been more conducive to female activity than other forms of warfare, even as women are also present in a wider variety of other broader temporal and geographical dimensions of the history of warfare. Hiding in Plain Sight is the only extensive annotated bibliography currently available which provides such a holistic overview of recent scholarship by grounding that scholarship in the existing military canon and history.
