Most scientists and engineers are familiar with the name Josef Stefan primarily from the Stefan-Boltzmann law, which relates the amount of energy transferred by radiation to the absolute temperature raised to the fourth power. Stefan determined this law from experimental data, and it was later theoretically verified by his former student, Ludwig Boltzmann. However, it is interesting to know that this is the same Stefan who lent his name to the solid-liquid phase change problem, and concepts related to molecular diffusion and convective motion driven by surface evaporation or ablation. Stefan counted among his students Sigmund Freud, who was so inspired by his physics instructor that he incorporated scientific methods into psychoanalysis. This invaluable book details not only Josef Stefan’s original contributions in these areas, but the current state-of-the-art of his pioneering work.

It is 1939, and Stefan Zurowski heads to his home nestled in the Masurian Lake District of Poland. Manipulated by his domineering father throughout his life, Stefan’s heart soars with the thought that the count has now called him home to protect their estate and its people from the German invasion. But when he arrives, Stefan finds a horrific scene. His entire family and household staff have been murdered. Now Stefan must continue the path laid out for him. Even in death, his father drives his future. After he journeys to war-torn Warsaw to find his father’s business manager, Stefan learns that his future as the new count must be played out in a strange land with a family that he didn’t know existed and with a wife he has never met. As danger follows him to his new country, Stefan realizes he has desperate enemies who will stop at nothing to obtain the treasure he now possesses. This he must protect, alongside his emotionally unstable wife, while attempting to determine if his enemies are within the new family he’s beginning to know or within another unknown presence. In this historical romance, fierce circumstances drive a young man from his war-torn home in Poland to his destiny in a new land.

The proceedings of ECML/PKDD2003 are published in two volumes: the P- ceedings of the 14th European Conference on Machine Learning (LNAI 2837) and the Proceedings of the 7th European Conference on Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (LNAI 2838). The two conferences were held on September 22–26, 2003 in Cavtat, a small tourist town in the vicinity of Dubrovnik, Croatia. As machine learning and knowledge discovery are two highly related ?elds, theco-locationofbothconferencesisbene?cialforbothresearchcommunities.In Cavtat, ECML and PKDD were co-located for the third time in a row, following the successful co-location of the two European conferences in Freiburg (2001) and Helsinki (2002). The co-location of ECML2003 and PKDD2003 resulted in a joint program for the two conferences, including paper presentations, invited talks, tutorials, and workshops. Out of 332 submitted papers, 40 were accepted for publication in the ECML2003proceedings,and40wereacceptedforpublicationinthePKDD2003 proceedings. All the submitted papers were reviewed by three referees. In ad- tion to submitted papers, the conference program consisted of four invited talks, four tutorials, seven workshops, two tutorials combined with a workshop, and a discovery challenge.
