A history of the Jewish community ("giudecca") in the Sicilian town of Salem. States that Salem was inhabitated by Jews from antiquity and always served as a refuge for Jews and Conversos. A provincial town, Salem was known for its libertarian and anti-clerical spirit, attributed to its Jews, who were later active among Freemasons in support of Garibaldi's movement. Outlines the Sicilians' tolerance toward Jews, making reference, nevertheless, to sporadic outbursts of violence such as the murder of 400 Jews in Modica in 1474, the introduction of the Inquisition and the "limpieza de sangre" statutes by the Spanish in 1483, the phenomenon of the Conversos, and the 1492 expulsion.
