Petoia Edizione integrale Pubblicato inizialmente a puntate e poi in volume nel 1895, Jude l’oscuro fu l’ultimo romanzo di Hardy e fu stroncato senza riserve dalla critica e dal pubblico vittoriano del tempo, a tal punto che Hardy ritenne conclusa la propria carriera di romanziere. Il libro, ribattezzato dalla critica «Jude the Obscene» (Jude l’Indecente), venne inoltre bruciato pubblicamente dal vescovo di Exeter lo stesso anno. Il protagonista della storia è Jude Fawley, un giovane uomo appartenente alla classe più umile della società, il cui sogno nella vita è divenire letterato. Altri due personaggi cruciali del racconto sono la volgare prima moglie di Jude, Arabella, e Sue, la cugina di cui si innamora perdutamente. Opera cupa e pessimista, ha avuto un’efficace trasposizione cinematografica nel 1996, per la regia di Michael Winterbottom, con Christopher Eccleston e Kate Winslet nei panni di Jude e Sue. «Parlarono per un po’ di tempo, guardandosi e appoggiandosi al parapetto del piccolo ponte. Il richiamo muto della donna, pronunciato chiaramente dalla personalità di Arabella, teneva Jude incollato a quel posto contro la sua intenzione, quasi contro il suo volere, con un sentimento del tutto nuovo per lui.» Thomas Hardy nacque nel 1840 in un’umile famiglia del Dorset, compì studi di architettura ma presto abbandonò l’idea di praticare quella professione per dedicarsi alla letteratura. Stabilitosi con la moglie, Emma Gifford, in una casa di campagna presso Dorchester, vi trascorse l’intera vita senza alcun evento degno di rilievo. Romanziere di grande successo, dopo la condanna moralistica di Jude l’oscuro smise di scrivere in prosa e divenne autore di poesie. Morì nel 1928 e fu sepolto nell’Abbazia di Westminster. Tra le altre sue opere vanno ricordate almeno Via dalla pazza folla (1874) e Tess dei D’Urbervilles (1891).

Un’opera che, ponendo in discussione il rapporto fra classi sociali e attaccando alle fondamenta le istituzioni più care alla società vittoriana, suscitò scandalo fra i contemporanei, che la bollarono come oscena e immorale.

However, she soon regrets this, because in addition to being in love with Jude, she is physically disgusted by her husband, and, apparently, by sex in general. Sue soon leaves Phillotson for Jude. Because of the scandal Phillotson has to give up his career as a schoolmaster. Sue and Jude spend some time living together without any sexual relationship, because of Sue's dislike both of sex and the institution of marriage. Soon after, Arabella reappears and this complicates matters. But Arabella and Jude divorce and she legally marries her bigamous husband, and Sue also is divorced. However, following this, Arabella reveals that she had a child of Jude's, eight months after they separated, and subsequently sends this child to his father. He is named Jude and nicknamed "Little Father Time" because of his intense seriousness and moroseness."
