The first comprehensive history of the German Jews on the eve of Hitler's seizure of power, this book examines both their internal debates and their relations with larger German society. It shows that, far from being united, German Jewry was deeply divided along religious, political, and ideological fault lines. Above all, the liberal majority of patriotic and assimilationist Jews was forced to sharpen its self-definition by the onslaught of Zionist zealots who denied the "Germanness" of the Jews. This struggle for the heart and soul of German Jewry was fought at every level, affecting families, synagogues, and community institutions. Although the Jewish role in Germany's economy and culture was exaggerated, they were certainly prominent in many fields, giving rise to charges of privilege and domination. This volume probes the texture of German anti-Semitism, distinguishing between traditional and radical Judeophobia and reaching conclusions that will give no comfort to those who assume that Germans were predisposed to become "willing executioners" under Hitler. It also assesses the quality of Jewish responses to racist attacks. The self-defense campaigns of the Central Association of German Citizens of the Jewish Faith included publishing counter-propaganda, supporting sympathetic political parties, and taking anti-Semitic demagogues to court. Although these measures could only slow the rise of Nazism after 1930, they demonstrate that German Jewry was anything but passive in its responses to the fascist challenge. The German Jews' faith in liberalism is sometimes attributed to self-delusion and wishful thinking. This volume argues that, in fact, German Jewry pursued a clear-sighted perception of Jewish self-interest, apprehended the dangers confronting it, and found allies in socialist and democratic elements that constituted the "other Germany." Sadly, this profound and genuine commitment to liberalism left the German Jews increasingly isolated as the majority of Germans turned to political radicalism in the last years of the Republic. This full-scale history of Weimar Jewry will be of interest to professors, students, and general readers interested in the Holocaust and Jewish History. Donald L. Niewyk studied at the Free University of Berlin and Tulane. He has taught at Xavier University and Ithaca College, and since 1982, he has been a professor of modern European history at Southern Methodist University. He is author of six books, including most recently Fresh Wounds: Early Narratives of Holocaust Survival.

Pp. 123-217, "Das Verhältnis der Linken zu den Juden", deal with anti-capitalism and antisemitism in the 19th century; xenophobia among the working class; the relationship of the Left to nationalism, religion, and Zionism; Left-wing reactions to antisemitism; the KPD's opinion on the "Jewish question"; the SDP and antisemitism; and left-wing philosemitism. Contends that the Left did not constitute a protective force for the Jews, since all left-wing groups had some religious, historical, or sociological reservations concerning them. The Jews were viewed as part of the middle-class, therefore belonging to the opposite side of the "barricades". The Jews themselves approached the Left mainly in response to antisemitic pressure. However, although individual Jews were associated with capitalism, Judaism as an abstraction was connected to nomadism, revolution, and modernity. Antisemitic thinkers could therefore reject Judaism while keeping up contacts with individual Jews. Influenced by the industrial and technical revolution, the Jews entered politics, fighting for emancipation, more or less at the same time as the socialists. The Jews wanted to assimiliate but, influenced by nationalism and antisemitism, they turned to Jewish nationhood in the form of Zionism towards the end of the 19th century. Over the course of the 20th century, the ideas of enlightenment and liberalism, which had brought the Jews equal rights, weakened, and the situation of the Jews became increasingly insecure. Concludes that unsolvable intra-Jewish divides, the sociologically and ideologically conditioned tensions with the Left, and the strength of German antisemitism caused the annihiliation of the Jewish minority in Germany.

A collection of documents, mainly from the archives of the Jewish community of Hamburg. Pp. cxxxiv-clv, "Antisemitismus", notes that the Hamburg city council was free of antisemitism under the Empire; it granted the Jews privileges and took a firm stand against antisemitic organizations. At the same time, the antisemitic Deutsch-Soziale Partei received 8,014 votes in Hamburg in the 1893 Reichstag elections. The Jewish community relied on the protection of the Senate and of the courts, even in the Weimar period, when there was a marked increase in antisemitic agitation. The two antisemitic parties, Deutsche Nationale Volkspartei and the NSDAP, polled about 25% of the Hamburg vote in the 1924 Reichstag elections. In 1930-32, Nazi rowdies terrorized the Jews; the authorities failed to respond to Jewish requests to intervene. Ch. 19 (pp. 1000-1073), "Antisemitismus und Abwehr des Antisemitismus", contains documents from the period 1919-January 1933, including internal community policy debates. See the index for additional material.
