Reviews the case of a bar-mitzvah celebration which took place in 1822 in Landsberg an der Warthe, in which three Christian pastors were among the guests. They attended in spite of a decree by the consistory in October 1821 which forbade evangelical officers to assist at Jewish celebrations. Emphasizes the contradictory aspect of this order, in view of the emancipation edict of 1812. Argues that while the empancipation edict took down visible walls between Jews and Christians, other, unvisible ones, were established. The first comprehensive history of how Jews became citizens in the modern world For all their unquestionable importance, the Holocaust and the founding of the State of Israel now loom so large in modern Jewish history that we have mostly lost sight of the fact that they are only part of—and indeed reactions to—the central event of that history: emancipation. In this book, David Sorkin seeks to reorient Jewish history by offering the first comprehensive account in any language of the process by which Jews became citizens with civil and political rights in the modern world. Ranging from the mid-sixteenth century to the beginning of the twenty-first, Jewish Emancipation tells the ongoing story of how Jews have gained, kept, lost, and recovered rights in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, the United States, and Israel. Emancipation, Sorkin shows, was not a one-time or linear event that began with the Enlightenment or French Revolution and culminated with Jews' acquisition of rights in Central Europe in 1867–71 or Russia in 1917. Rather, emancipation was and is a complex, multidirectional, and ambiguous process characterized by deflections and reversals, defeats and successes, triumphs and tragedies. For example, American Jews mobilized twice for emancipation: in the nineteenth century for political rights, and in the twentieth for lost civil rights. Similarly, Israel itself has struggled from the start to institute equality among its heterogeneous citizens. By telling the story of this foundational but neglected event, Jewish Emancipation reveals the lost contours of Jewish history over the past half millennium.

In 2013, Germany celebrated the bicentennial of the so-called Wars of Liberation (1813-15). These wars were the culmination of the Prussian struggle against Napoleon between 1806 and 1815, which occupied a key position in German national historiography and memory. Although these conflicts have been analyzed in thousands of books and articles, much of the focus has been on the military campaigns and alliances. Karen Hagemann argues that we cannot achieve a comprehensive understanding of these wars and their importance in collective memory without recognizing how the interaction of politics, culture, and gender influenced these historical events and continue to shape later recollections of them. She thus explores the highly contested discourses and symbolic practices by which individuals and groups interpreted these wars and made political claims, beginning with the period itself and ending with the centenary in 1913.

Als eine der ersten akademisch ausgebildeten jüdischen Historikerinnen in Deutschland nimmt Selma Stern infolge des Ersten Weltkriegs ihre Studien zur Erforschung der jüdischen Geschichte auf. Unter dem Eindruck von Weimarer Republik und Nationalsozialismus, Flucht und Exil entstehen ihre Publikationen Jud Süß und Der preußische Staat und die Juden. Beide Werke, die Gegenstand der vorliegenden Untersuchung sind, gelten bis heute als bedeutende Beiträge zur deutsch-jüdischen Historiografie. Gleichzeitig spiegeln sie die Arbeitsweisen und -bedingungen in unterschiedlichsten materiellen, ideellen und politischen Kontexten wider. Ab 1920 an der Berliner Akademie für die Wissenschaft des Judentums angestellt, forschte Stern noch bis kurz vor ihrer Emigration im Jahr 1941 in Deutschland, bevor sie ihre Studien in den Vereinigten Staaten und in der Schweiz bis in die 1970er Jahre hinein fortsetzte. Den institutionellen Rahmen hierfür bildete das 1955 gegründete Leo Baeck Institute New York. Irene Aue-Ben-Davids Darstellung der vielschichtigen Werk- und Rezeptionsgeschichte Selma Sterns weist über die wissenschaftsgeschichtliche Bedeutung einer einzelnen Person weit hinaus: Sie zeigt Gründe, Formen und Probleme eines neuerlichen Wiederanknüpfens an eine deutsch-jüdische Geschichtsschreibung auf, deren Bezugsrahmen durch den Holocaust zerstört worden war.

Die ›Judenfrage‹ entwickelte sich seit 1780, in Reaktion auf die Schrift von Christian Wilhelm Dohm, und erfuhr mit der begrifflichen Prägung durch Bruno Bauer 1842 ihre vollständige Ausprägung. Sie wurde in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts zu einem zentralen Begriff für die Probleme im Zusammenleben von Deutschen und Juden und bündelte zahlreiche politische, soziale, gesellschaftliche und religiöse Konfliktlinien, die sich insbesondere in den verschiedenen Debatten im Zeitraum zwischen 1780 und 1847 widerspiegelten. Die vorliegende Publikation untersucht die Herausbildung der ›Judenfrage‹ in der Wechselwirkung von öffentlicher Debatte, Regierungspolitik und gesellschaftlicher (bürgerlicher) Entwicklung in Preußen. Diese drei Ebenen beeinflussten sich, auch auf Grund des fehlenden Parlaments, intensiv und verstärkten das zeitgenössische Problembewusstsein, eröffneten aber auch immer wieder vollkommen neue Sichtweisen und Aktionsmöglichkeiten. Dabei existierte weder auf jüdischer noch auf nichtjüdischer Seite ein mehrheitlich akzeptiertes Handlungsmodell für den Umgang mit der jüdischen Minderheit, was sich in der Vielfältigkeit von Beziehungs- und Integrationskonzepten offenbarte. Die unterschiedlichen Varianten der zeitgenössischen Diskussion über die ›Judenfrage‹ können dabei die sich permanent ändernden Austauschprozesse zwischen Mehrheits- und Minderheitskultur und die sich verändernden Grenzen zwischen ihnen veranschaulichen.

Enlightened Nationalism provides the first synthesis in English of Prussian political culture from the Napoleonic era to the Revolution of 1848. Matthew Levinger challenges the conventional notion that Prussia lagged behind Western Europe in its political development, demonstrating that Prussian leaders embraced a distinctive program of political modernization in response to their country's defeat by Napoleon in 1806-1807. Building on the eighteenth-century tradition of enlightened absolutism, Prussian leaders attempted to unite a rationalized monarchy with a politically active "nation," thus mobilizing the populace to resist the French oppressors. The new culture of "enlightened nationalism" influenced the political theory and program of both liberals and conservatives in nineteenth-century Prussia. The book has important implications for understanding both subsequent German history and the history of nationalism in general. The author shows that the so-called authoritarian tendencies in Prussia's political culture resulted from its distinctive response to the challenges of the French Revolution and Napoleonic era, rather than from the persistence of premodern cultural or socioeconomic patterns. Likewise, by showing how nationalist activists drew on the cultural legacy of the Enlightenment, Levinger demonstrates that German nationalism cannot be understood as a uniquely pathological political phenomenon. Inspired by recent work exploring the role of discourse in historical change, the book analyzes how the word "nation" functioned in day-to-day debates and how this limited and shaped political options. Enlightened nationalism produced a mixed legacy: it promoted the reform of the education system, popular participation in local self-government, and administrative rationalization. But it also resulted in exaggerated fears of political dissent, reinforcing the authority of the monarchical state and inhibiting the formation of a vibrant system of parliamentary rule.
