Where else are you allowed to strangle an opponent unconscious? It is a sport of balletic beauty and extraordinary violence.ÿBut while its aim is to inflict symbolic death, judo is a form of combat which also rigorously insists on the most formal courtesies.ÿ When Mark Law joined his local judo club he was able to observe at close quarters the sport practised at its highest level - finding himself face-to-face with world champions and Olympic medallists. His journey into judo took him to Osaka, Japan to see the World Championships and to Athens for the Olympics. He delved into the sport's history, exploring everything from its origins in 17th century Samurai culture, to its legendary proponents - past and present. The Pyjama Game is a fascinating account of this most enigmatic of sports. We are taken behind the scenes of the international tournament circuit, populated by some of the most fearsomely single-minded and self-denying competitors of all time -men and women who have arrived at the apex of a sport from thousands of local clubs all over the world. Through a series of colourful encounters we experience the irresistible drama of tournament judo as figures grapple, whirl and fly through the air or struggle for arm-locks and chokes; each contest culminating in that symbolic death. Funny, alarming and mesmerising, The Pyjama Game is one of the best sports books of recent years.

Originally published in 1906, "The Game of Ju-Jitsu" is an accomplished work by two of the great Judoka of all time. In simple, precise, and declarative descriptions, the key elements of Ju-Jitsu are explained as well as the many improper applications (Faults), that can take place in a common match. Along with over 90 illustrations and photographs many current techniques as well as techniques no longer used in traditional Judo matches are covered. Falling exercises, Standing work, Simple and Advanced Throws, Groundwork, Hold-downs, and a variety of Locking techniques are covered. Both of the authors (Taro(Taruji) Miyake & Yukio Tani) were early proponents of teaching Jujutsu techniques to Western students. Miyaki started his training under Fusen-ryu Jujutsu ground-fighting Newaza master Mataemon Tanabe, as well as Osaka master Yataro Handa and is credited for helping establish Judo in the United Kingdom at the start of the 20th century. Miyake toured through spectacles and music halls, defeating many of the best wrestlers of the time and engaging in open all-comers challenge matches. Tani was a pioneering Japanese Jujutsu and Judo instructor and professional challenge wrestler, notable for being one of the very first Jujutsu stylists to teach and compete outside of Japan. On stage Tani was known as the "pocket Hercules" and was famous throughout all levels of London society. In 1904, Tani and Miyake opened the Japanese School of Jujutsu that was located at 305, Oxford Street W, London.

This book includes several lessons in which a limited number of judo techniques are practised repeatedly. The judo teacher can use these lessons to prepare the students for their next grade exam. All lessons are wrapped in a fantasy story that children love. The students will enjoy doing judo while living a fantasy. They will do judo while dancing like dragons, riding a motorbike, flying on a broomstick or fighting a polar bear. There is also room for some holiday themes like Easter and Christmas because judo is so catchy that even Santa himself cannot resist doing it. Take your youngster on a journey to the fantastic world of dragons, wizards, elves and samurai and teach them the basics about judo using a method that appeals to them.
