En la Biblia Vulgata Latina, aparecen como los dos primeros de los cuatro libros de los Reyes. Nuestro título identifica el nombre de Samuel con estos primeros dos libros históricos. Esto no es porque él sea el escritor, aunque nosotros creemos que Samuel es el escritor de una buena porción de este libro. Es más bien porque su extraordinaria biografía es presentada al comienzo, y él figura prominentemente como la persona que Dios usó para ungir a los dos primeros reyes de Israel, es a saber, Saúl y David. Samuel, entonces, es considerado el escritor de 1 Samuel hasta el capítulo 25 el cual registra su muerte. Aparentemente, Natán y Gad terminaron la escritura de estos libros. Nos enteramos de esto por lo que dice 1 Samuel 10:25: Samuel recitó luego al pueblo las leyes del reino, y las escribió en un libro, el cual guardó delante de Jehová. Y envió Samuel a todo el pueblo cada uno a su casa. También 1 Crónicas 29:29, dice: Y los hechos del rey David, primeros y postreros, están escritos en el libro de las crónicas de Samuel vidente, en las crónicas del profeta Natán, y en las crónicas de Gad vidente.
