Kirjeisiin, haastatteluihin ja kirjailijan tuotantoon perustuva teos tuo yllättäviä piirteitä maamme kuuluisimman kirjailijan lähikuvaan. Sen myötä avautuvat niin Waltarin innoituksen lähteet, tutkimusmatkat kuin huikaisevan rakastumisen ja karvaan pettymyksen aallokot, jotka Waltari eli huippuja ja pohjia myöten. Täyttymyksen hetkinä hän saavutti unenomaisen yhteyden menneisiin aikakausiin ja kuvaamiinsa henkilöihin. Unio Mystica oli vuoden 2008 puhutuimpia ja luetuimpia tietokirjoja. Se voitti Lauri Jäntin ja P. E. Svinhufvudin muistosäätiön palkinnon ja sai myös Historian Ystäväin Liiton myöntämän Vuoden historiakirja -tunnustuksen. Panu Rajala (s. 1945) on filosofian tohtori, kirjailija ja draaman tutkimuksen professori. Hän on kirjoittanut useita etevästi ja elävästi kohdettaan kuvaavia elämäkertoja, mm. F. E. Sillanpään kolmiosaisen elämäkerran, Arvo Poika Tuomisesta kertovan Petturin testamentin (1994) Hannu Rautkallion kanssa sekä J. H. Erkon elämää esittelevän teoksen Runoilijan sydän (2006). Mika Waltarin elämäkerta Unio Mystica, joka kohosi arvostelijoiden ja suuren yleisön suosikiksi, voitti Lauri Jäntin ja P. E. Svinhufvudin muistosäätiön palkinnon vuonna 2008. Teos sai myös Historian Ystäväin Liiton myöntämän Vuoden historiakirja -tunnustuksen. Tampereen yliopiston teatterin ja draaman tutkimuksen professorina toiminut Rajala on myös kirjoittanut useita näytelmiä, romaaneja ja elokuvakäsikirjoituksia. Hän on mm. avustanut Matti Kassilaa Aila Meriluodon kohuttuun Peter-Peter-kirjeromaaniin perustuvassa elokuvassa Haluan rakastaa, Peter (1972) ja dramatisoinut Rauni Mollbergin ohjaaman naturalistisen elokuvan Maa on syntinen laulu (1973). www.panurajala.fi
