Il presente volume, frutto di anni di lavoro,cerca per la prima volta di fare il punto, non certo definitivo, ma quanto più possibile esaustivo, della fase iniziale (1916-1921) dell’impegno culturale e intellettuale di Julius Evola (1898-1974) riunendo tutta insieme la sua opera artistica come teorico dell’arte d’avanguardia, poeta e pittore in modo da fornire ai semplici lettori, agli specialisti e ai critici italiani e stranieri quanto in precedenza era disperso e introvabile, fornendo così un’immagine finalmente completa e totale dell’Evola artista. Il volume è stato diviso in quattro sezioni.Dopo un’introduzione generale affidata a Carlo Fabrizio Carli, coordinatore del libro, la prima è dedicata ai manifesti e agli interventi critici anche d’occasione, con la introduzione di Francesco Tedeschi e con molte delle note che Elisabetta Valento redasse per un volume che riuniva quasi tutti questi testi. Articoli, conferenze e manifesti sono quelli del 1916-1921, durante la sua piena attività artistica. Ma poiché Evola intervenne sull’argomento anche in seguito, sono presenti quelli sino al 1931 dedicati alla spiegazione, difesa e superamento dell’arte d’avanguardia. Evola però se ne occupò ancora, in una temperie personale e generale assai diversa: sono gli interventi usciti fra il 1939 e il 1964, riuniti in una addenda. Il testo evoliano più importante è di certo Arteastratta (1920) che proprio per questo viene presentato in riproduzione anastatica, quindi comprendente anche le illustrazioni e le poesie che poi si ritroveranno nelle rispettive sezioni. Un “ritratto dell’artista da giovane” è stato tracciato da Guido Andrea Pautasso ricostruendo l’immagine che di Evola hanno dato i testimoni e i giornali dell’epoca. La seconda parte è riservata alla sua produzione poetica con introduzione di Vitaldo Conte. Le poesie sono quelle che l’autore decise di riunire, fra edite e inedite, nel volume che Scheiwiller pubblicò nel 1969. A esse ne sono state aggiunte alcune “inedite” che Evola scrisse per Dadaglobe, rintracciate da Guido Andrea Pautasso. Inoltre, in una appendice di Andrea Scarabelli sono presentate le “varianti” di tre poesie poi inserite in Raâga Blanda, che dovevano comparire sul una rivista progettata da Evola stesso e che mai uscì. Il suo titolo doveva essere Malombra e la sua storia viene raccontata in un’altra appendice curata da Emanuele La Rosa che comprende i menabò che egli realizzò per l’occasione, ora conservati presso il Centro Apice dell’Università degli Studi di Milano. L’altro contributo di Evola è La parole obscure du paysage intérieur(1920),la cui brochure anche in questo caso si riproduce in originale. La terza sezione comprende l’epistolario con Tristan Tzara, il fondatore e nume tutelare del dadaismo, fondamentale per capire il pensiero del giovane artista sino al superamento del dadaismo e il clima dell’epoca, con un’introduzione molto ampia e articolata di Emanuele La Rosa che prende lo spunto dalle missive per ricostruire azioni, intenzioni e ambienti dell’attività evoliana in quel periodo, e una nota di Elisabetta Valento alla cui sagacia si deve la scoperta di queste lettere nel 1989 e la pubblicazione nel 1991. Un’appendice si occupa dell’attività artistica di Evola in Germania nei medesimi anni e riproduce per la prima volta il catalogo della grande mostra che si svolse nel gennaio 1921 alla galleria “Der Sturm” di Berlino, con il commento di Emanuele La Rosa che il documento ha rintracciato. In esso si può leggere l’elenco, sino a oggi inedito, di tutti i quadri lì esposti dal giovane pittore. La quarta e ultima parte di questo volume è infine dedicata alla sua opera pittorica con la riproduzione di una selezionedei suoi quadri sulla cui autenticità non ci sono dubbi, con la introduzione di Enrico Crispolti, il critico che riscoprì Evola in quanto artista d’avanguardia nel 1963. Un’appendice di Dalmazio Frau esamina un aspetto sempre ignorato dell’Evola artista, quello di grafico e creatore di copertine per i propri libri. Segue il catalogo-schedario curato da Carlo Fabrizio Carli e Francesco Tedeschi con tutte le informazioni necessarie per classificare e inquadrare le opere, tracciandone una sintetica storia e interpretazione. Il volume è arricchito da decine di fotografie, manifesti, copertine di libri e riviste.

Attraverso il “vivere pericoloso”, l’arte e la poesia, l’eros di Julius Evola (1898-1974) – come pensiero e virus – in pubblicazioni, convegni e manifestazioni dal 2005. Ultimamente le espressioni della sua esistenza ispirano la mia “eros-narrazione” fantastica. Il nome di Evola continua a essere considerato, in alcuni ambiti, un tabù in Italia. Questo occultamento mi ha indotto a curare una mostra sul suo lavoro artistico a Reggio Calabria (2005), che ho visto attraverso l’alchimia dell’astrazione mistica. La sua arte e poesia sconfinante “guardano” le avanguardie storiche più radicali, come il Futurismo e il Dada (di cui in Italia è il principale esponente). Uno degli aspetti del pensiero di Evola più coinvolgente è la sua dotta “lettura” dell’eros per mezzo del libro Metafisica del sesso (1958), che analizza varie dottrine. La sua importanza consiste anche nel far conoscere testi e saperi antichi, in anticipo sulla cultura del tempo, e, talvolta, ancora oggi oscuri o poco conosciuti. (V.C.)

How Dada is to break its cultural accommodation and containment today necessitates thinking the historical instances through revised application of critical and theoretical models. The volume Dada Culture: Critical Texts on the Avant-Garde moves precisely by this motive, bringing together writings which insist upon the continuity of the early twentieth-century moment now at the start of the twenty-first. Engaging the complex and contradictory nature of Dada strategies, instanced in the linguistic gaming and performativity of the movement’s initial formation, and subsequently isolating the specific from the general with essays focusing on Ball, Tzara, Serner, Hausmann, Dix, Heartfield, Schwitters, Baader, Cravan and the exemplary Duchamp, the political philosophy of the avant-garde is brought to bear upon our own contemporary struggle through critical theory to comprehend the cultural usefulness, relevance, validity and effective (or otherwise) oppositionality of Dada’s infamous anti-stance. The volume is presented in sections that progressively point towards the expanding complexity of the contemporary engagement with Dada, as what is often exhaustive historical data is forced to rethink, realign and reconfigure itself in response to the analytical rigour and exercise of later twentieth-century animal anarchic thought, the testing and cultural placement of thoughts upon the virtual, and the eventual implications for the once blissfully unproblematic idea of expression. From the opening, provocative proposition that historically Dada may have been the falsest of all false paths, the volume rounds to dispute such condemnation as demarcation continues not only of Dada’s embeddedness in western culture, but more precisely of the location of Dada culture. Ten critical essays – by Cornelius Partsch, John Wall, T. J. Demos, Anna Schaffner, Martin I. Gaughan, Curt Germundson, Stephen C. Foster, Dafydd Jones, Joel Freeman and David Cunningham – are supplemented by the critical bibliography prepared by Timothy Shipe, which documents the past decade of Dada scholarship, and in so doing provides a valuable resource for all those engaged in Dada studies today.

La studiosa romana non si è limitata a collocare Evola in quello straordinario scenario d’avanguardia che aprì il XX secolo, ma ne ha evidenziato le peculiarità, entrando nel solco pittorico dell’artista e offrendone una lettura “magica”. Il suo è un originale viaggio nell’iconologia di dipinti poco noti, raccordati fra loro secondo un criterio che tende a sottolineare una sorta di formula alchemica che li descrive e li determina. Una raccolta di bellissime immagini a colori completa il libro consentendone la piena comprensione.

Questo libro, che inizialmente avrebbe dovuto chiamarsi "Il sentiero del cinabro" e che poi l’autore mutò in bozza, venne completato entro la metà del 1962 e pubblicato dall’editore Vanni Scheiwiller nel marzo 1963, con lo scopo di rispondere alle polemiche suscitate dall’intellighenzia italiana all’uscita di Cavalcare la tigre nel novembre 1961, in quanto si riteneva intollerabile che fosse stato pubblicato un saggio di un autore ancora messo all’indice. Julius Evola lo aveva scritto per farlo pubblicare dopo la sua morte, ma prevalse la richiesta del giovane editore milanese. Non si tratta di un’opera autobiografica, precisa il filosofo, ma di una “guida attraverso i miei libri”, anche se trattando, più che di vicende e fatti personali, di idee e di quei valori tradizionali che hanno caratterizzato tutta la sua vita, ben gli si adatta la definizione di “autobiografia spirituale”. In quanto tale Il cammino del cinabro ha una importanza fondamentale ed è determinante non soltanto per ben comprendere il percorso delle tesi e della “visione del mondo” che mossero Julius Evola, ma soprattutto per constatare come ci sia un filo conduttore e una coerenza di fondo che legano tutte le sue opere e le posizioni che in esse vengono trasmesse.
