Exoplanets: Finding, Exploring, and Understanding Alien Worlds probes the basis for possible answers to the fundamentals questions asked about these planets orbiting stars other than our Sun. This book examines what such planets might be like, where they are, and how we find them. Until around ten years ago, the only planets that we knew about were within the Solar System. The first genuine planet beyond the confines of the Solar System was discovered only 1988. Since then another 350 or so exoplanets have been detected by various methods, and most of these haven been found in the last ten years. Although many more exoplanets discoveries may be expected to occur even as this book is being read, a large enough data set is now available to form the basis for an informed general account of exoplanets. The topic hence is an extremely "hot" one - all the more so because the recently launched Kepler spacecraft should soon start uncovering many more exoplanets, some perhaps comparable with the Earth (and therefore possibly alternative homes for mankind, if we could ever reach them). Exoplanets: Finding, Exploring, and Understanding Alien Life gives a comprehensive, balances, and above all accurate account of exoplanets.

The GNU Autotools make it easy for developers to create software that is portable across many Unix-like operating systems. Although the Autotools are used by thousands of open source software packages, they have a notoriously steep learning curve. And good luck to the beginner who wants to find anything beyond a basic reference work online. Autotools is the first book to offer programmers a tutorial-based guide to the GNU build system. Author John Calcote begins with an overview of high-level concepts and a quick hands-on tour of the philosophy and design of the Autotools. He then tackles more advanced details, like using the M4 macro processor with Autoconf, extending the framework provided by Automake, and building Java and C# sources. He concludes the book with detailed solutions to the most frequent problems encountered by first-time Autotools users. You'll learn how to: –Master the Autotools build system to maximize your software's portability –Generate Autoconf configuration scripts to simplify the compilation process –Produce portable makefiles with Automake –Build cross-platform software libraries with Libtool –Write your own Autoconf macros Autotools focuses on two projects: Jupiter, a simple "Hello, world!" program, and FLAIM, an existing, complex open source effort containing four separate but interdependent subprojects. Follow along as the author takes Jupiter's build system from a basic makefile to a full-fledged Autotools project, and then as he converts the FLAIM projects from complex hand-coded makefiles to the powerful and flexible GNU build system.

Applications of Space Developments covers the proceedings of the 31st Annual Congress of the International Astronautical Federation on Applications of Space Developments, held in Tokyo, Japan. The contributors consider the significant achievements and activities in Japan in the main areas of space applications, such as telecommunications, earth and ocean observation, materials sciences, and space processes. This book is organized into 22 chapters, which reflect the four main areas covered in the Annual Congress, including Earth-Oriented Applications of Space Technology, Earth Observations, Low-Gravity Environment, and Communication Satellites. The first chapters deal with the monitoring of earth and ocean energy resources, earth satellite power stations, energy conversion and transfer, structure technology, system fabrication and assembly of large space structures, and, nuclear waste disposal in space. The succeeding chapters are devoted to weather satellites, earth and ocean dynamics, earth and atmosphere pollution, payloads for earth and ocean observations, data analysis. These topics are followed by discussions on the theoretical and experimental aspects of microgravity materials, fluid and life sciences, the simulation of microgravity environment on earth, the effects of weightlessness on man, and the earth applications of space experiments. The concluding chapters survey the operational, experimental, and communication satellites systems, with emphasis on economic aspects and on the prospects of TV satellites. This book will prove useful to space scientists and technologists, astronomers, and satellite and communications engineers.

Redesigning The Firm written by Edward H. Bowman and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-08-31 with Business & Economics categories.
The rapidly changing nature of the modern industrial world has helped spark a radical rethinking of the design of corporations, changes no less revolutionary than the wave of innovations associated with the names of Frederick Taylor and Henry Ford at the dawn of this century. In Redesigning the Firm, nineteen experts from one of the nation's premier business schools, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, take an informed look based on their own research at various aspects of this revolution, offering managers a host of insights and powerful tools for orchestrating change in their firm. Redesigning the Firm illuminates many of the challenges that confront the executive, approaching the issue from a wide variety of perspectives. The book considers, for instance, whether the firm's stockholders, directors, and managers should reevaluate how they distribute power and share information, and it explores why external board members often fail to exercise a strong voice in governance. It looks at the changing boundary of the firm, as partnerships and alliances have become more important, examining this new development in three types of market: emerging markets such as Eastern Europe, markets where economies of scale provide a critical advantage, and dynamic markets where speed is essential. It examines the use of suppliers in Japanese, American, and European firms, and finds the former to be more efficient. Some of the essays are quite eye-opening. For instance, one chapter demonstrates that firms can increase product variety at no extra cost, revealing how a study of the automotive industry shows that investing in training, in flexible manufacturing processes, and in better operations management will increase variety without compromising productivity or lowering quality. And one chapter sounds a strong note of dissent, contending that the design of organizations matters little to a global competitor--what matters is how managers think about the world, and how the operating procedures they use guide decision-making and behavior. In the final section, editors Bowman and Kogut reflect on two outstanding issues concerning the design of the firm: how much of what managers used to believe was critical to their success can they place outside their ownership boundaries; and how to deal with the complex challenges that modular design presents. The editors apply their conclusions to the Wharton School itself, making the book particularly valuable for anyone concerned with the quality and future of business education in America. Here then is the best thinking by leading experts in corporate design, who examine the best ways to generate speed, variety, and flexibility, to expand the firm over time and over national boundaries, and to prepare a corporation for the next century.
