This volume narrates the financial history of the United States during a period of great upheaval in the early part of the 21st century. It is divided into three chronological sections: the first section describes the recovery of financial markets after the Great Recession. It begins with an overview of the state of the economy at the start of the new decade, including some of the political storms affecting the economy and financial markets. It explores the uneven nature of the recovery and volatility in the Treasury during these years. The second section sets forth regulatory responses to the Financial Crisis of 2008, including the massive fines imposed on large banks by a swarm of regulators. It examines the “too big to jail” prosecution model, cases involving Libor and foreign exchange manipulation and the impact of rogue traders. It also looks at the developments in payment systems, rise of crowdfunding as a source of capital, and high-frequency trading. The third section describes the rules adopted under the Dodd-Frank Act of 2010 that broadly affected financial markets. It also recounts the Trump trade wars and ends with an account of the financial and economic turmoil that occurred during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. The volume will be an essential addition to academic and public libraries with readers drawn from business schools, departments of economics and finance, and historians.

In addition to the infectious context, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought many complications to social life. Fear, anxiety, misinformation, and loneliness associated with isolation, as well as uncertainty about the days ahead, have already caused psychological and emotional changes in many people. Many social groups, such as cancer patients, the elderly, schoolchildren, and people with disabilities, were particularly vulnerable to the psychosocial effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. In light of current data, even the WHO suggests that the psychological context of the pandemic may have caused more psychological damage than World War II. Some researchers also infer the existence already of a post-pandemic stress syndrome, which is currently not an official medical diagnosis, but rather a subtype of PTSD that is being diagnosed. Also noted in the context of the pandemic is the breakdown of many social ties due to isolation, loneliness, the development of symptoms of depressive or anxiety disorders, and the transformation of social life. Thus, it seems reasonable to estimate the magnitude of phenomena of psychosocial importance, resulting from the impact of the epidemiological situation associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. The primary issue to be considered within the framework of the topic is the identification of psychosocial factors affecting the quality of mental and social health of various social groups, which are determined by the epidemiological situation associated with COVID-19. In this view, the determining variables will be personal feelings of stress, fear, anxiety, depression, discouragement, alienation, and loneliness, and in a global sense the reference of these phenomena to the comfort and quality of social life, with particular emphasis on interpersonal relationships. COVID-19, as mentioned above, continues to be an important social issue, and, although the situation related to it has recently softened and media reports becoming less frequent. It is inferred that we will only now see the full impact of the problems associated with the mental health crisis and the breakdown of interpersonal relationships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As media continues to evolve, social media has become even more integral to public relations activities, presenting new opportunities and challenges for practitioners. Relationships between publics and organizations continue to be first and foremost, but the process and possibilities for mutually beneficial relationships are being rewritten in situ. This volume aims to explore and understand highly engaged publics in a variety of social media contexts and across networks. The hope is the expansion and extension of public relations theories and models in this book helps move the discipline forward to keep up with the practice and the media environment. Contributors analyzed a range of organizations and industries, including corporate, entertainment, government, and political movements, to consider how public relations practitioners can facilitate ethical and effective communication between parties. A consistent thread was the need for organizations and practitioners to better understand the diverse backgrounds of publics, including age, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation, beyond surface-level demographic stereotypes and assumptions. This book will be of interest to researchers, academics, and students in the field of public relations and communication, especially those with a particular interest in online engagement and social media as a PR tool.

"The novel coronavirus of 2019 (COVID-19) has caused one of the largest pandemics in human history. COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic in March 2020. The worldwide COVID health crisis has affected virtually every aspect of daily life, namely the conditions in which we are born, grow, learn, work, and age. For the last three years, for instance, we have engaged in social distancing, remote meetups and seemingly endless Zoom calls. We have also changed how we view healthcare, with many increasing their use of telemedicine. Many have also abandoned city living for a more comfortable life in suburban, peri-rural and rural environments, with greater access to trees and parkland. Travel has been significantly impacted-disrupting existing social networks but also potentially deepening more localized social networks. For some, these changes were only in initial lockdown period(s); for others, these changes may be ongoing. The idea for our book emerged from overwhelming evidence that the pandemic intersects with nearly every social determinant of population health and aggravating existing inequalities in social conditions and health outcomes"--

Hindu Diasporas presents the histories and religious traditions of Hindus with a South Asian ancestral background living outside of South Asia. Hinduism is a global religion with a significant presence in many countries throughout the world. The most important cause of this global expansion is migration. This book presents and analyses the most important of the geographies, migration histories, religious traditions and developments, rituals, places, institutions, and representations of Hinduism in the diasporas, capturing some of the great plurality of Hindu religious traditions. The first part of the book concentrates on the major regions in the world in which Hindu diasporas are found. The main focus is the modern period, but the book discusses also the possibility of premodern Hindu diasporas in Southeast Asia. The second part focuses on specific central themes such as Vaishnava, Shaiva, and Shakta traditions in diasporas, temples, and traditions of sacred sites and pilgrimage outside of South Asia, Hindutva organizations and the diaspora, as well as relations between Hindu diasporas and new followers of Hindu traditions. The chapters in this book show some of the global presence of the Hindu diasporas and some of the dynamic developments in multiple geographical spaces. Analysing specific spaces and themes, the chapters of the book offer a foundation for understanding the Hindu traditions in its most important global diasporic contexts and the dynamic developments around the world.
