Jerome Klapka Jerome (1859-1927) was an English author, best known for the humourous travelogue Three Men in a Boat (1889). In 1877, he decided to try his hand at acting, under the stage name Harold Crichton. He joined a repertory troupe who tried to produce plays on a shoestring budget, often drawing on the meager resources of the actors themselves to purchase costumes and props. He tried to become a journalist, writing essays, satires and short stories, but most of these were rejected. Over the next few years he was a school teacher, a packer, and a solicitor's clerk. Finally, in 1885, he had some success with On the Stage-and Off, a humourous book, the publication of which opened the door for more plays and essays.

Political Friendship And Degrowth written by Areti Giannopoulou and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-01-31 with Social Science categories.

Developing a contemporary account of political friendship and synthesizing it with the radical movement of degrowth, this book provides the ethical grounding and the rationale of an alternative economy which serves human flourishing. The Aristotelian political friendship embodies active concern for the others’ well-being that contemporary societies lack; the crucial problems of ecological destruction and global poverty illustrate this friendship deficit. Arguing for the need for re-embracing a friendly civic ethos and re-aligning the economy with moral objectives, the author updates the Aristotelian idea and identifies it with democratic-autonomous political-economic praxis that ensures citizens’ self-actualization. Degrowth movement questioning economic growth and productivism, and privileging a simpler life with less material goods, favours political friendship precisely because it nourishes its unconscious substratum namely human instinctual sociality. The call for genuine democratic political praxis that political friendship implies could enable the degrowth movement to retain its radical character and accomplish the shift to an economy which serves life. The book is worthwhile studying by students and researchers across social sciences and especially by scholars in the fields of sociology, philosophy, and politics, but also a broader readership sensitive to the issues of social and environmental sustainability will find this work extremely interesting.

Gezi At Ten written by and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-02-19 with Social Science categories.

Upon the tenth anniversary of the Gezi protests, the book takes upon the task of critically re-examining the social uprising of June 2013 in Turkey by compensating for blind spots in the academic corpus hitherto generated. This volume braves into subjects largely neglected by the extant scholarship, in particular, the organizational aspects of the Gezi upheaval, which bear heavily on the course of social and political affairs that has since taken dramatic turns. By delving into the question of political practice, whether on the part of the state, the government or the opposition, the book re-evaluates how the emergent collective momentum was managed by the contesting parties. In other words, the volume concentrates on the multifaceted political organizing of social forces in conflict both during and in the aftermath of the protests. Contributors are: Athina Arampatzi, Gökhan Atılgan, Özgür Balkılıç, Selin Dingiloğlu, Antoine Dolcerocca, Çağlar Dölek, Kürşad Ertuğrul, Ufuk Gürbüzdal, Ezgi Kaya Hayatsever, Eren Karaca, Sebla Ayşe Kazancı, Arca Özçoban, Ezgi Pınar, Sungur Savran, Ozan Siso, Aylin Topal, Fatih Yaşlı and Adem Yeşilyurt.

The core purpose of this distinctive book is to offer academics working in higher education practical support in achieving formal accreditation of their teaching practice with the Higher Education Academy (HEA). It maps a range of key themes against the UKPSF (United Kingdom Professional Standards Framework) and invites readers to engage with the all-important dimensions of practice. This book is relevant both to those who are in the process of preparing an application for an HEA fellowship and to those who are preparing assignments they might be producing for a PG Cert (HE) programme. The book explains the dimensions of practice in detail and offers readers suggestions for ways in which they might engage with particular aspects of the UK PSF at the end of each section and thus evidence the quality of their teaching practice. Each section also offers suggestions on ways to develop teaching as related to the themes. Its distinctive features include: Linking explicitly to the UK PSF (UK Professional Standards Framework) and offering practical advice to those making a fellowship application. Integrating this practical element with some of the wider debates about the purpose of higher education Incorporating a thread of student engagement throughout the book, including students' own perspectives on the themes of the book. Not only will the book support academics following an accreditation route, the book will also be a useful companion text on taught courses since the UK PSF is the overarching framework for people working in HE in a teaching capacity. Whether you are working in higher education or working in college based higher education then this is the book for you.

Identity Construction And Tourism Consumption written by Erdal Arslan and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-10-26 with Business & Economics categories.

This book explores how identity plays a pivotal role in tourism consumption. Almost all tourism-related consumption studies underestimate or refer inadequately to identity's relationship with tourism consumption. As identity phenomenon is considerably a new subject in the tourism literature, this book examines its relationship with the consumption theory. It is of interest to readers curious about how pre-, during, and post-consumption activities affect a person's identity and vice versa. This book contains an analysis of consumption theories and a summary of literature identifying the phenomenon's evolution through pre-modern, modern, and post-modern periods. In this context, this book aims to enlighten the interactions between identity construction and tourism consumption. The grounded theory, one of the qualitative research approaches, was applied to accomplish the relevant purpose, and in-depth interviews were recruited following the method approach stages to enable the researchers to gain new insights into the subject. By presenting the identity tended tourism consumption model, this book provides a set of profound contributions to the relevant literature and insight for practitioners/decision-makers and entrepreneurs. This book attempts to clarify the tourists' consumption process and understand how the interactions between identity construction and tourism consumption work. The qualitative methodology (grounded theory) allows in-depth analysis and insights of the participants of the study on their definitions of themselves as human beings and as tourists, decisions on their travel plans, their considerations, motivations to travel and destination preferences, interactions with others, vacation activities, evaluations on their travel experiences, et cetera. Therefore, this book appeals to readers of marketing, business operations, sociology, and economics.
