Even though she is internationally recognized as an artist-her paintings are in the permanent collections of several museums and in many private collections-poetry was her way of recording her life experiences since she was a child. "Poetry has served me well as a way to respond to people, places and events in the world. It is my second language," she said. She was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1919 and grew up in Indiana and western New York State. She received degrees from the University of Michigan and lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her biography, "Left Early, Arrived Late," by Teddy Jones, was also published by Sunstone Press She has been named a Santa Fe Living Treasure in recognition of her many accomplishments.
