Yrjö Keinonen (1912–1977) toimi puolustusvoimain komentajana vuosina 1965–1969. Hän oli kiistelty hahmo, joka jätti jälkensä Suomen puolustusratkaisuihin, mutta synnytti kaudellaan myös voimakkaita jännitteitä. Urho Kekkonen nimitti Keinosen komentajaksi monen kokeneemman kenraalin ohitse, eivätkä ristiriidat Keinosen ympärillä lieventyneet ajan kuluessa. Vaikka uusi komentaja teki puolustusvoimissa uudistuksia, joita Kekkonen oli halunnut, henkilöstön luottamus komentajaan alkoi rakoilla pahasti. Ristiriitojen ja epäsuosion seurauksena Keinonen pyysi eroa tehtävistään vuonna 1969. Muistelmateos kaikkien aikojen kiehtovimmasta puolustusvoimien komentajasta perustuu kirjailija Pentti Airion väitöskirjaan. Pentti Airio on eläkkeelle jäänyt prikaatikenraali, joka on kirjoittanut useita sota-aiheisia tietokirjoja. Airio on koulutukseltaan sotatieteiden tohtori.
