Kafaraka è la storia autobiografica dell'autore, argentino di origini libanesi trapiantato in Italia. Il romanzo racconta le varie tappe della vita dell'autore, dall'infanzia, in una famiglia benestante ma frugale della provincia argentina, alla formazione come studente, al desiderio di bruciare le tappe, di vivere intensamente, raggiungendo obiettivi sempre più alti. La vita cambia quasi per caso, leggendo di una selezione per una borsa di studio in Italia. Giunge nel nostro paese sentendosi come un astronauta su un altro pianeta, ed è convinto che in quanto emigrante abbia sempre qualcosa da dimostrare in più rispetto agli altri, riuscendo ad aprirsi una strada proprio grazie alla sua forte motivazione. Tra le pagine emerge anche uno spaccato della storia e della società argentine degli ultimi decenni. Il romanzo si conclude con un ritorno alle origini, un viaggio in Libano alla scoperta dei luoghi in cui tutto è cominciato. Vede l’inizio del progetto della sua famiglia, che lo ha portato fino in Italia, nella partenza di suo nonno per l'Argentina, con l'idea di dare un'istruzione a suo figlio, il padre dell'autore, che da deputato riuscirà a far costruire una scuola nel piccolo paesino di Fernandez.

كفرعكا هي قصة حياة المؤلف. أرجنتيني من أصول لبنانية يعيش في إيطاليا. تتحدث الرواية عن المراحل المختلفة التي مرت بها حياة المؤلف، بدءاً من الطفولة في عائلة ثرية لكنها مقتصدة في المقاطعة الأرجنتينية، إلى التعليم كطالب، إلى الرغبة في تخطي مراحل عديدة بشكل سريع والعيش بشكل مكثف من خلال تحقيق أهداف تدريجية أعلى فأعلى. غالباً ما تتغير الحياة عن طريقة الصدفة. فمن خلال القراءة عن منحة دراسية في إيطاليا أسرع للحصول عليها ووصل إلى بلدنا وهو يشعر كأنه رائد فضاء على كوكب آخر مقتنعاً أنه بصفته مهاجرًا لديه دائمًا ما يقوم به ويثبته أكثر من غيره، وهذا ما جعله يتمكن من فتح طريقه بفضل هذا الدافع القوي لديه. ويتخلل صفحات هذا الكتاب أيضًا مقطع عرضي لتاريخ الأرجنتين والمجتمع الأرجنتيني خلال العقود الأخيرة. تنتهي الرواية بالعودة إلى الأصول، رحلة إلى لبنان لاكتشاف الأماكن التي بدأ فيها كل شيء. يرى بداية مشروع عائلته، الذي أوصله إلى إيطاليا، في رحيل جده إلى الأرجنتين حاملاً معه فكرة إعطاء التعليم لإبنه، والد المؤلف، الذي أصبح نائباً فتمكن من بناء مدرسة في بلدة فرنانديز الصغيرة Fernandez. ترجمة الدكتور شوكت ناصر

The Sword of Ambition belongs to a genre of religious polemic written for the rulers of Egypt and Syria between the twelfth and the fourteenth centuries. Unlike most medieval Muslim polemic, the concerns of this genre were more social and political than theological. Leaving no rhetorical stone unturned, the book’s author, an unemployed Egyptian scholar and former bureaucrat named 'Uthman ibn Ibrahim al-Nabulusi (d. 660/1262), poured his deep knowledge of history, law, and literature into the work. Now edited in full and translated for the first time, The Sword of Ambition opens a new window onto the fascinating culture of elite rivalry in the late-medieval Islamic Middle East. It contains a wealth of little-known historical anecdotes, unusual religious opinions, obscure and witty poetry, and humorous cultural satire. Above all, it reveals that much of the inter-communal animosity of the era was conditioned by fierce competition for scarce resources that were increasingly mediated by an ideologically committed Sunni Muslim state. This insight reminds us that seemingly timeless and inevitable “religious” conflict must be considered in its broader historical perspective. The Sword of Ambition is both the earliest and most eclectic of several independent works composed in medieval Egypt against the employment of Coptic and Jewish officials, and is vivid testimony to the gradual integration of Islamic scholarship and state administration that was well underway in its day.
