This Third Edition includes updated and added content tracing the life and genealogy of Gervase Macomber (c1780-1866), his 26 children and at least 120 grandchildren and hundreds of great grandchildren. In 1796, Jarvis Macomber, the son of a soldier of the American Revolution and descendant of the Mayflower, left home to seek his fortune in the fur trade among the Mohawks of the Northwest. His English name, Macomber, was instrumental in tracing a lineage within an Indian culture that otherwise did not have surnames. Jarvis Macomber left Massachusetts and lived in Canada, and there he married the daughter of a prominent Mohawk Indian. He became a Catholic and became known as Gervase (Gervais) Macomber. He was a fur trader and a merchant; he operated a trading post, ran a ferry across the St Lawrence River, he became an Agent of the Chiefs and an Interpreter for the Department of Indian Affairs; and he was a soldier in the War of 1812 against the Americans.

This book is the first comprehensive study of the driving force behind Native political activism, and the only scholarly treatment of North American Indian politics which integrates an explicitly Native perspective. With a broad historical scope rich in detail, and drawing on the particular experience of the Mohawks of Kahnawake, it offers an explanation of Indian and Inuit political activism focusing on the importance of traditional values and institutions in shaping Native responses to the state. The book explains the recent rise of a militant assertion of sovereignty on the part of Native people in terms of three major factors: the existence of alternative institutions in the body of the nation's traditional culture; the self-conscious development of an alternative identity; and a persistent pattern of negative interaction with the state. It differs from other analyses focusing on similar factors in that it views nationalism not as a movement which activates in response to external factors, but as a persistent feature of political life which manifests itself in either a latent or active form in response to the interaction of the three factors discussed in the model.

Traditional Mohawk Teachings that speak of the importance of women, respect for nature and universal peace. Historically, the Mohawk First Nation has long been associated with violence, although their society is based on the Great Law of Peace. At long last, this book draws back a veil on the true nature of the Mohawk people, their beliefs and their great struggles. For an entire year, Guylaine Cliche spent time with people from the Traditional Mohawk Council of Kahnawake, attended ceremonies and recorded their teachings, so she could pass them on to us in writing. To echo the oral tradition, she has organized the book like a talking circle, in which fifteen people from nine different clans express themselves. To ensure the text’s accuracy, she carried out this task under the supervision of the Traditional Council. This little-known culture cannot be understood without the knowledge of certain traditional teachings unfamiliar to outsiders. These include the absolutely essential teachings of the Moon, which highlight the importance of women at the heart of society, since, according to the Mohawks, Sky Woman was the source of Creation. As a matrilineal nation, the Mohawks speak to us, among other things, of how urgent it is to re-establish female power in our modern societies. A new universal equilibrium must emerge, based on respect for the environment and a return to values of peace and understanding among nations. A heartfelt plea to make a better world a reality, this book leads us into a universe endowed with a rich and deep spirituality. It encourages us to reengage with our roots and makes us want to take concrete action to honour and respect our Mother Earth. The Kanienkehaka, “People of the Flint”, are the founders of the Five Nations of the Iroquois confederacy and the Great Law of Peace. The Traditional Mohawk Council of Kahnawake is what is known as a “Longhouse”. A Longhouse is much more than a dwelling: it’s a way of life that ensures the peace and tranquillity of its inhabitants.

Combining historical background with discussion of contemporary Native nations and their living cultures, this comprehensive text introduces students to some of the many indigenous peoples in North America. The book is organized into parts corresponding to regional divisions within which similar, though not identical, cultural practices developed. Each part opens with an overview of the topography, climate, and natural resources in the area, and describes the range of cultural practices and beliefs grounded in the area. Subsequent chapters are devoted to specific tribal groups, their history, and the conditions of contemporary Native communities. Nancy Bonvillain provides context for the regional and tribe-specific chapters through a brief overview of Native American history beginning around 1500 and covering the early period of European exploration and colonization. She details both U.S. and Canadian policies affecting the lives, cultures, and survival of more than five hundred Native nations on this continent. Finally, she offers up-to-date demographics and addresses significant social, economic, and political issues concerning Native communities. The second edition features new material throughout, including a new two-chapter section on the Native nations of the Plateau, expanded introductory material addressing topics such as climate change and recent Supreme Court decisions, up-to-date demographic and economic data, and more.

Military historian Carl Benn explores the rich history of our nation with two absorbing stories of bravery in this special two-book bundle. Mohawks on the Nile: Natives Among the Canadian Voyageurs in Egypt, 1884-1885 Mohawks on the Nile explores the absorbing history of sixty Aboriginal men who left their occupations in the Ottawa River timber industry to participate in a military expedition on the Nile River in 1884-1885. Chosen becuase of their outstanding skills as boatmen and river pilots, they formed part of the Canadian Voyageur Contingent, which transported British troops on a fleet of whaleboats through the Nile’s treacherous cataracts in the hard campaigning of the Sudan War. Historic Fort York, 1793-1993 Fearing an American invasion of Upper Canada, John Graves Simcoe had Fort York built in 1793 as an emergency defensive measure. That act became the first step in the founding of modern Toronto. In this book, Carl Benn explores the dramatic roles Fort York played in the frontier war of the 1790s, the birth of Toronto, the War of 1812, the Rebellion of 1837 and the defence of Canada during the American Civil War, and describes how Toronto’s most important heritage site came to be preserved as a tangible link to Canada’s turbulent military past.

Mixed-blood urban Native peoples in Canada are profoundly affected by federal legislation that divides Aboriginal peoples into different legal categories. In this pathfinding book, Bonita Lawrence reveals the ways in which mixed-blood urban Natives understand their identities and struggle to survive in a world that, more often than not, fails to recognize them. In ?Real? Indians and Others Lawrence draws on the first-person accounts of thirty Toronto residents of Native heritage, as well as archival materials, sociological research, and her own urban Native heritage and experiences. She sheds light on the Canadian government?s efforts to define Native identity through the years by means of the Indian Act and shows how residential schooling, the loss of official Indian status, and adoption have affected Native identity. Lawrence looks at how Natives with ?Indian status? react and respond to ?nonstatus? Natives and how federally recognized Native peoples attempt to impose an identity on urban Natives. Drawing on her interviews with urban Natives, she describes the devastating loss of community that has resulted from identity legislation and how urban Native peoples have wrestled with their past and current identities. Lawrence also addresses the future and explores the forms of nation building that can reconcile the differences in experiences and distinct agendas of urban and reserve-based Native communities.

From Ellen Gabriel to Tantoo Cardinal, many of the faces of Aboriginal people in the media today are women. In the Days of Our Grandmothers is a collection of essays detailing how Aboriginal women have found their voice in Canadian society over the past three centuries. As the settler state of Canada expanded into Indigenous lands, two traditions clashed in a bruising series of asymmetrical encounters over land use and ownership. One site of conflict was Kahnawà:ke. The Laws and the Land delineates the establishment of a settler colonial relationship from early contact ways of sharing land; land practices under Kahnawà:ke law; and ultimately the Canadian invasion in the guise of the Indian Act, private property, and coercive pressure to assimilate. This meticulously researched book is connected to larger issues of human relations with environments, communal and individual ways of relating to land, legal pluralism, historical racism and inequality, and Indigenous resurgence.
