Tunis, Kairouan and Carthage - the very names conjure up visions of 'a hundred dramatic scenes and incidents which have governed the subsequent history of the world'. In this volume (written at the beginning of the twentieth century) Graham Petrie gives a thorough and detailed account of the history and contemporary life of these Tunisian habitations. But this is no mere travel guide: the author's first-hand acquaintance with the places and people he describes is evident in the absorbing narrative and delicate watercolours which are reproduced in full colour.

Excerpt from Tunis, Kairouan Carthage Among the many books concerning the history of Tunisia which I have consulted, those included in the following list have proved the more interesting and profitable. To their authors I gratefully acknowledge my indebtedness, and tender my cordial thanks, confidently recommending their pages to readers who would supplement my modest essays with more substantial fare, and bridge the gaps between some scattered fragments from the grim chronicles of Time. "The Roman History of Appian of Alexandria" (translated from the Greek by Horace White); "Figures et Recits de Carthage Chretienne" (Abel Alcais); "Histoire G6n6rale de la Tunisie" (Abel Clarin de la Rive); "Carthage and the Carthaginians" (R. Bosworth Smith); "L'Afrique Romaine" (Gaston Boissier); "Carthage" (Ernest Babelon); "Carthage of the Phoenicians (Mabel Moore). Qayraw N written by William Gallois and has been published by Penn State Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-04-04 with Art categories.

In the last years of the nineteenth century, the Tunisian city of Qayrawān suddenly found itself covered in murals. Concentrated on and around the city’s Great Mosque, these monumental artworks were only visible for about fifty years, from the 1880s through the 1930s. This book investigates the fascinating history of who created these outdoor paintings and why. Using visual archaeological methods, William Gallois reconstructs the visual history of these works and vividly brings them back to life. He locates pictorial records of the murals from the backdrops of photographs, postcards, and other forms of European ephemera. In Qayrawān, he identifies a form of religious painting that transposed traditional aesthetic forms such as house decoration, embroidery, and tattooing—which lay exclusively within the domains of women—onto the body of a conquered city. Gallois argues that these works were created by women as a form of “emergency art,” intended to offer amuletic protection for the community, and demonstrates how they differ markedly from “classical” Islamic antecedents and modern modes of Arab cultural production in the Middle East and North Africa. Based on extensive archival research, this study is both a record of a unique moment in the history of art and a challenge to rethink the spiritual force and agency of a group of anonymous female artists whose paintings aspired to help save the world at a time of great peril. It will be welcomed by scholars of art history, Islamic studies, Middle East studies, and the history of magic.
