European law, including both civil law and common law, has gone through several major phases of expansion in the world. European legal history thus also is a history of legal transplants and cultural borrowings, which national legal histories as products of nineteenth-century historicism have until recently largely left unconsidered. The Handbook of European Legal History supplies its readers with an overview of the different phases of European legal history in the light of today's state-of-the-art research, by offering cutting-edge views on research questions currently emerging in international discussions. This is the first book to apply the concept of ‘contents tourism’ in a global context and to establish an international and interdisciplinary framework for contents tourism research. The term ‘contents tourism’ gained official recognition in Japan when it was defined by the Japanese government in 2005, and it has been characterised as ‘travel behaviour motivated fully or partially by narratives, characters, locations, and other creative elements of popular culture forms including film, television dramas, manga, anime, novels and computer games’. The book builds on previous research from Japan and explores three main themes of contents tourism: ‘the Contentsization of Literary Worlds’, ‘Tourist Behaviours at “Sacred Sites” of Contents Tourism’ and ‘Contents Tourism as Pilgrimage’ and draws together these key themes to propose a set of policy implications for achieving successful and sustainable contents tourism in the 21st century.

Man nannte ihn den »Napoleon des deutschen Buchhandels". Johann Friedrich Cotta, ein Jurist mit mathematisch-naturwissenschaftlichem Interesse und Talent, war ein Quereinsteiger: 1787 kaufte er die Tübinger J. G. Cotta`sche Buchhandlung von seinem Vater und machte in wenigen Jahren mit Genie und Tatkraft aus einem provinziellen Universitätsverlag den bedeutendsten Universalverlag seiner Zeit. Herzstück war der »Klassikerverlag" mit den Werken Goethes und Schillers, dazu verlegte er über 60 Zeitungen und Zeitschriften und betrieb einen Kunst- und Landkartenverlag. Mit großzügigen Honoraren und zukunftsweisenden Verträgen war er ein Vorkämpfer der Autorenrechte. Er wirkte für Reformen des Buchhandels und agierte als »Deputierter" des deutschen Buchhandels auf dem Wiener Kongress gegen den »Nachdruck" und für »Pressfreiheit". Cottas Biographie wird hier zum ersten Mal umfassend aus den Quellen erzählt. Sie zeigt mit großem psychologischen Einfühlungsvermögen den Verleger, Unternehmer und Politiker als exemplarische Gestalt in einer Umbruchszeit, in der so gut wie alle Institutionen und Traditionen ins Wanken kamen und auf allen Gebieten Neuland betreten wurde. Cotta war ein Pionier der öffentlichen Meinung, der deutschen »Nationalliteratur" wie der wissenschaftlichen und industriellen Revolution. Gleichzeitig wird aber auch ein kritischer Blick auf Cottas komplizierten, von Eitelkeit und mancher inneren Unsicherheit geprägten Charakter geworfen.
