Swami Bawra is the primary source and inspiration for this compilation of uniquely penetrating and accessible insights into Samkhya and Yoga. Kapil's Samkhya is the foundation of thought underlying the methods of Yoga. This commentary revives the core philosophy of Samkhya in the ancient search for truth and freedom from suffering. Nature and spirit are distinct, but emanate eternally from one Source. Nature projects into life as a continuum from causal and subtle energy to gross matter. Spirit or consciousness, integral to all existence, is that which enlivens nature. Realization of the eternal relationship between the individual and the Source of energy and consciousness ends suffering in one's present life.

The sutras attributed to the sage Kapila comes in six books. The six books together are available under the title "Samkhya Pravachana Sutra". The first book summarises all the concerns of the other five books too. This is not a truthful translation, this is a reading. The scholarly ones who wants to learn Kapila Sutra with the seriousness it deserves they have to read the original texts. Importance of Samkhya is that this provides the theoretical foundation for Patanjali's yoga sutras. It distinguishes itself from Vedanta, Buddhism, Jainism, and Nyaya Darshans. Like Buddha, Kapila too addresses the issue of suffering. How to remove human suffering is the fundamental question the book addresses. As I read, I found this book is still relevant, a modern reader may not find it discardably ancient. The book is still relevant. I have not researched on the historical context of its writing.

The metaphysics of Patanjali is built on the same dualist foundation as the Samkhya school. The universe is conceptualized as two realities in Samkhya-Yoga schools: Puruṣa (consciousness) and Prakriti (mind, cognition, emotions, and matter). It considers consciousness and matter, self/soul and body as two different realities. Jiva (a living being) is considered as a state in which puruṣa is bonded to Prakriti in some form, in various permutations and combinations of various elements, senses, feelings, activity, and mind. During the state of imbalance or ignorance, one of more constituents overwhelms the others, creating a form of bondage. The end of this bondage is called Kaivalya, liberation, or moksha by both Yoga and Samkhya schools. The ethical theory of Yoga school is based on Yamas and Niyama, as well as elements of the Guṇa theory of Samkhya. Patanjali adopts the theory of Guṇa from Samkhya. Guṇas theory states that three Gunas (innate tendency, attributes) are present in different proportions in all beings, and these three are sattva guna (goodness, constructive, harmonious), rajas guna (passion, active, confused), and tamas guna (darkness, destructive, chaotic). These three are present in every being but in different proportions, and the fundamental nature and psychological dispositions of beings are a consequence of the relative proportion of these three Gunas. When sattva guna predominates an individual, the qualities of lucidity, wisdom, constructiveness, harmony, and peacefulness manifest themselves; when rajas are predominant, attachment, craving, passion-driven activity, and restlessness manifest; and when tamas predominates in an individual, ignorance, delusion, destructive behavior, lethargy, and suffering manifests. The guṇas theory underpins the philosophy of mind in the Yoga school of Hinduism.

Excerpt from The Yoga Aphorisms of Patanjali: With the Commentary of Bhoja Raja and an English Translation It also quotes Badari, a teacher, and Bádarayana, probably a grandson of Badari, and author of the Vedanta Sútras or later Mimans'a, as also of a commentary on the Toga Sútra. The Vedanta in its turn refutes adverse doctrines of all the five, and thereby admits their pre-existence. This state of facts can be reconciled only by the supposition that the different dogmas and the schools which cherished them existed for a long time before the dogmas were written down in the aphoristic form in which we have them now. Oral transmission must have been the principal means of their preservation for a long time. There might have been also text-books before, but they were set aside by the very complete systems which the new texts produced, and in the new systems the refutation of adverse opinions very naturally included all the theories which were prevalent at the time when the books were compiled, and not the theories only of the time when the original dogmas were first promulgated. This is also obvious in other ways. In the case of the Sankhya Sútra, though it is usually attributed to Kapila, one of the mind-born sons of Brahmá, we find it refers to an "ancient teacher" (A'charya, A. V, 31), and to "venerable preceptors" (A. VI, 69). Sanandana and Panchas'ikha are cited by name (V, 32, and VI, 69). Kapila is then said to have taught his doctrine to A'surí, who is described both as a brother and a pupil of the teacher. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali - Book 2: Sadhana Pada What relevance does the wisdom of the ancient and timeless practice and philosophy of yoga have for us today? Has the world qualitatively changed such that the principles of life and the dynamics of consciousness as observed by the seers and teachers of ancient times are no longer relevant? Is modern culture’s aim of freedom to pursue desires and experience the world through the senses a sufficient explanation and justification of life? In Sadhana Pada the ageless methods for achieving freedom from desires are presented. These life changing principles and practices are offered here so that they can be tested and experienced in the setting of modern life; the experience of peace that they bring can then be measured against the experience of a life spent fulfilling desires.
