Sus aforismos, de los que aquí se presenta la primera recopilación, publicada en 1909 y revisada en 1923, son la quintaesencia de su pensamiento y el laboratorio en el que afina su inigualable estilo, basado en alusiones, paradojas y juegos de palabras, con el que se propone desenmascarar los clichés de un lenguaje falsificador que impide ver el mundo. Su acerada pluma arremete contra los valores establecidos, la concepción burguesa del arte y la actitud imperante respecto a la sexualidad y a las mujeres (ante las que Kraus se debate entre la misoginia del entonces muy influyente Weininger y la reivindicación de una mayor libertad para su vida privada), y sobre todo contra los tópicos propios del periodismo, al que llegó a responsabilizar del desencadenamiento de la Primera Guerra Mundial y, más tarde, del ascenso del nacionalsocialismo. Figura clave de la vida cultural vienesa, considerado por muchos el más importante escritor satírico en lengua alemana del siglo XX, Kraus ejerció una gran influencia sobre Adorno, Benjamin, Brecht, Canetti y Wittgenstein, entre otros.
