English summary: Karl von Hase (1800-1890) was one of the most influential church historians of his time, and his liberal-Protestant church historiography had a lasting impact, not only on academic theology. Taking into account previously unknown sources, Magdalena Herbst presents a comprehensive study of his complete works. In doing so, she connects various approaches, such as biographical investigations, analyses of the theological and philosophical basis for his concept, the reconstruction of Hase's scholarly controversies as well as observations of how his works were received. In the development of Protestant church historiography since the 18th century, Hase's achievement consisted of overcoming rationalistic, pragmatic church historiography by using an independent concept which centered on his theory of Protestantism. The role played by artistic, literary, historical and theological representations in the establishment of the European Reformation has attracted scholarly attention over the years. While they were generally regarded as a significant means of conveying the evangelical message, particularly in a society with a low average literacy rate, this scholarly consensus was then seriously challenged by objecting that their meaning must have remained opaque to those who couldn't read and interpret their sometimes multilayered imagery and their verbal and figurative messages. This volume, which publishes some of the papers delivered at the Fourth Reformation Research Consortium Conference held in Bologna, May 15th–17th, 2014, is an attempt to examine the visual intelligibility of the European Reformation by a comparative, multiconfessional and multidisciplinary analysis of examples taken from both the Catholic and the Protestant world in the Early Modern and Modern Era, with particular reference to the figurative arts, but also to history and theology. All the case studies included here examine their peculiar subjects with regard to their religious and artistic contexts, in order to understand their historical significance in a new fashion, combining approaches from political history, history of arts, historiography, anthropology, philosophy and theology. Thus, the volume offers a very rich outline of how visual culture and representation through arts was embodied in very different cultural portraits and images.

Tucker S. Ferda examines the theory of the Galilean crisis: the notion that the historical Jesus himself had grappled with the failure of his mission to Israel. While this theory has been neglected since the 19th century, due to research moving to consider the response of the early church to the rejection of the gospel, Ferda now provides fresh insight on Jesus' own potential crisis of faith. Ferda begins by reconstructing the origin of the crisis theory, expanding upon histories of New Testament research and considering the contributions made before Hermann Samuel Reimarus. He shows how the crisis theory was shaped by earlier and so-called “pre-critical” gospel interpretation and examines how, despite the claims of modern scholarship, the logic of the crisis theory is still a part of current debate. Finally, Ferda argues that while the crisis theory is a failed hypothesis, its suggestions on early success and growing opposition in the ministry, as well as its claim that Jesus met and responded to disappointing cases of rejection, should be revisited. This book resurrects key historical aspects of the crisis theory for contemporary scholarship.

English summary: As a protestant theologian, philosopher, Plato translator, churchman and pedagog, Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834) was one of the greatest men of his time, yet his work on church history has been hitherto little investigated. Simon Gerber sets out to change that and offer new avenues into Schleiermacher's work and thinking. The author deals with Schleiermacher's work on church history within the context of his philosophical and theological systems, while also paying attention to the historical and theological debates of the time. Schleiermacher gave three lectures on church history but his work here encompassed much more and included a theological encyclopaedia, teachings on Christian ethics and essays on the history of dogma. According to Schleiermacher, church history reveals Christianity as an effective force in the world for establishing community and creating history.
