Die Untersuchung zeigt, dass die Mehrheit der Topmanagerinnen aus verschiedenen Nationen ihre Karrieren durch lokale Unternehmenswechsel oder den globalen Wechsel von Arbeitgebern aufbaut. Es gibt für Managerinnen weltweit nicht nur ein Karrieremuster oder den einen richtigen Karrierepfad. Von den fünf Karrieretypen, die hier beschrieben werden, dominieren drei. Karrieremuster, bei denen familiäre Entscheidungen im Mittelpunkt stehen, sind in dieser internationalen Studie nur bei 17 % der Frauen der Stop-and-Go Gruppe vorherrschend. Die Mehrheit der Frauen verfolgen ungebundene und globale Karrieren, die sich durch viele Unternehmenswechsel beschreiben lassen. Die weiblichen Rollenvorbilder für den Aufstieg im Management besitzen eine starke Karriereorientierung, verfolgen eigenverantwortliche Karrieren und ordnen andere Lebensrollen ihrer primären Rolle als Managerin unter. Gerade weil Frauen weltweit im gehobenen Management weiterhin in der Minderheit sind, können die Karrierewege und Karrieremuster von erfolgreichen Frauen, die bereits die Spitzen von Unternehmen erreicht haben, andere Frauen inspirieren und sie darin unterstützen, ihre Karrieren strategischer zu planen. Karrieretypologien, die die Karrierewege und -muster von erfolgreichen Frauen im Management systematisieren, können Frauen als Orientierungsmodelle dienen, um eigene Karriere Entscheidungen und Planungen auf der Basis der Erkenntnisse von Rollenmodellen vorzunehmen oder diese als Reflexionsrahmen, zum Beispiel im Rahmen eines Exekutive Coachings zu nutzen. Five patterns of women in senior management: Bounded – Unbounded global – Stop and Go – Flexible hoppers – Lean on and move up Women worldwide are still often the minority in top management so the career paths and patterns of successful role models can offer guidance and real inspiration for other women. Career typologies of women in senior management functions can support other women when they set their career plans and need to make decisions. One outcome of the international research driven from the Global Women Career Lab is an intercultural career typology of top women managers in various countries, which offers valuable insights into women strategies for building careers. The typology analysis role model focuses on how women who achieved top management positions around the world built their careers and the characteristics go with it. The analysis describes the five career types which were most frequent in the research group. Different to the handful of existing typologies for women in management, more than 80 % of the women researched here show patterns and paths where career decisions are not made with a focus on family or other external conditions. Most women have pursued an unbounded career, often globally and changing employers in order to rise up the corporate hierarchy. Experienced coaches can use the Global Women Career Lab typology to stimulate reflection on career decisions and shed light on the choices of women in management levels. The typology also shows HR experts that talented women chose companies according to the opportunities they offered for women to rise in senior management.

A significant amount of German and French career agents are involved with international careers. Applying Bourdieu’s Theory of Practice, Matthias Walther compares the repatriation of German and French career agents into the external labor markets of their parent country career fields. A qualitative content analysis of 40 semi-structured interviews shows that the German and French career agents’ career capital and habitus develops during expatriation, which has an important impact on the re-integration into the parent country career field. The Author shows that in an international career mobility context, the rules of the game change compared to the rules in a pure national career context, which challenges the pertinence of national career models in understanding repatriation in a Franco-German context.

Christian Poulsen examines the matter of prestige in academia. He sets out to disprove the widely accepted notion that universities are based on a pure meritocratic system. The study compounds extensive survey studies of Swedish professors as well as focus group interviews with male and female professors. It was investigated whether female professors are discriminated against in the transferring of merit to prestige. The acquiring of prestige is essential for succeeding at a career in academia. The distribution of prestige between women and men may help explain the low representation of women in full professor positions. The book helps to bridge the gap between various existing explanatory models. The findings were compared with other studies on prestige and status in which Spain served as a reference country.It was found that women were not discriminated against on the basis of the merits they had in relation to prestige. Additionally it was revealed that professors feel the status of the profession has decreased, but on the other hand female professors were more satisfied with the current status of professors. Not surprisingly it was also found that the prestige of Swedish professors is not based alone on merit. Instead relational factors play a role in the assignment of prestige. Christian Poulsen introduces the term 'consecrating moments' to explain the relational nature of assigning prestige. The concept refutes the widely accepted idea that a career in academia is made up of a long and continual flow of good performance. In doing so, it discusses sociology of education, feminist theory of women in academia and the theory developed by Robert K. Merton and his followers.The book is the PhD dissertation of Christian Poulsen, adhered to the Sociology department at the Lund University.

Editors’ Foreword The fundamental changes currently taking place in the national and international science landscapes can no longer be overlooked. Within those changes, reforms do not go ‘as planned’ but, as is always the case with processes of rationali- tion, have a series of unintended effects. At the same time it becomes incre- ingly clear who in this process are the winners and who are the losers, although this is still subject to fluctuation and change. This can be illustrated by two - amples from current events: Where the range of taught courses is concerned, as part of the Bologna Process the new structuring of student study paths and their organisation is aimed at unifying the European area of science to ensure a study that is equally permissive and efficient. However, it is to be deplored that the mobility of s- dents has become more restricted because of an increasing specialisation in the available study paths. Also, bachelor degrees do not meet with the anticipated high response from the labour market in all countries, so that the master’s degree is becoming more or less a ‘must’, while at the same time the number of study places on master’s courses is limited. Instead of the intended reduction in the duration of study time in comparison to the previous German ‘Magister’ and ‘Diplom’, rather a prolongation in the duration of studies has been recorded.
