This study has given new impetus to the research on the development of Kantian ethics, which has been moribund for some time. Based on a comprehensive evaluation of lecture transcripts which have now been published and the use of computerized support, the previous picture of the moral philosopher Kant who supposedly stopped much too early has to be drastically revised. Using the customarily ignored classification of imperatives as a guideline, the study shows step by step how twisted the long path was to the concept of ethics in the Grundlegung zur Metaphysik der Sitten (Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals). In differentiating between skillfulness, prudence and morality as the three basic kinds of practice, Kant succeeds in the end in expressing the exciting complexity of human activity in an ingeniously simple and a simply ingenious manner.

Scottish philosophy had a decisive impact in the 18th century, not only on the English-speaking world but also on the Enlightment in central Europe. That impact was perhaps most greatly felt in Germany, where the advancement of Scottish moral sense philosophy, Hume's Scepticism and Common Sense philosophy was marked by a series of important translations. Six of the most significant texts, most of them very rare today, are reprinted here. Although some of the works by Scottish philosophers were known and discussed before the death of Christian Wolff, their importance increased considerably after the decline of German school metaphysics around the middle of the century. English at that time was less widely known, so the German editions became highly influential. The translations were often by important German Enlightenment thinkers and philosophers such as Lessing and Christian Garve, and several were provided with interesting introductions and commentaries by their translators and editions. In the case of Hume's first "Enquiry", the editor Johann Georg Sulzer, an adherent of Wolffian metaphysics, commented extensively on Hume's philosophy. It was this translation that famously woke Kant from his "dogmatic slumber".

The Concept Of Drive In Classical German Philosophy written by Manja Kisner and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-24 with Philosophy categories.

This volume gathers a collection of fourteen original articles discussing the concept of drive in classical German philosophy. Its aim is to offer a comprehensive historical overview of the concept of drive at the turn of the 19th century and to discuss it both historically and systematically. From the 18th century onward, the concept of drive started to play an important role in emerging disciplines such as biology, anthropology, and psychology. In these fields, the concept of drive was used to describe the inner forces of organic nature, or, more particularly, human urges and desires. But it was in the period of classical German philosophy that this concept developed into an important philosophical concept crucial to Kant’s and post-Kantian idealistic systems. Reflecting the complexity of this concept, the volume first discusses historical sources of drive theories in Leibniz, Reimarus, and Blumenbach. Afterwards, the volume presents the philosophical accounts of drives in Kant, Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel, and also gives a systematic overview of other important drive theories that were formed around 1800 by Herder, Goethe, Jacobi, Novalis, Reinhold, Schiller, and Schopenhauer.

This volume sheds new light on Immanuel Kant’s conception of anthropology. Neither a careful and widespread search of the sources nor a merely theoretical speculation about Kant’s critical path can fully reveal the necessarily wider horizon of his anthropology. This only comes to light by overcoming all traditional schemes within Kantian studies, and consequently reconsidering the traditional divisions within Kant’s thought. The goal of this book is to highlight an alternative, yet complementary path followed by Kantian anthropology with regard to transcendental philosophy. The present volume intends to develop this path in order to demonstrate how irreducible it is in what concerns some crucial claims of Kant’s philosophy, such as the critical defense of the unity of reason, the search for a new method in metaphysics and the moral outcome of Kant’s thought.

Kant S Transition Project And Late Philosophy written by Oliver Thorndike and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-11 with Philosophy categories.

Kant's Transition Project and Late Philosophy is the first study to provide a close reading of the connection between texts written by Kant during 1796 and 1798. Connecting Kant's unfinished book project, the Opus postumum, with the Metaphysics of Morals, it identifies and clarifies issues at the forefront of Kant's focus towards the end of his life. Labelled by Kant as the "Transition Project†?, the Opus postumum generates debate among commentators as to why Kant describes the project as filling a "gap†? within his system of critical philosophy. This study argues for a pervasive transition project that can be traced through Kant's entire critical philosophy and is the key to addressing current debates in the scholarship. By showing that there is not only a Transition Project in Kant's theoretical philosophy but also a Transition Project in his practical philosophy, it reveals why an accurate assessment of Kant's critical philosophy requires a new understanding of the Opus postumum and Kant's parallel late writings on practical philosophy. Rather than seeing Kant's late thoughts on a Transition as afterthoughts, they must be seen at the centre of his critical philosophy.

Problems Of Reason Kant In Context written by Antonino Falduto and has been published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-09-02 with Philosophy categories.

This volume aims to make a significant contribution to the debate surrounding the renaissance of Kant studies in the last few decades, with a particular emphasis upon some 'problems of reason'. Like no other, Kant covered the entire breadth of the modern debate concerning the concept of reason and its forms. Accordingly, despite the range of topics this volume inevitably deals with, Immanuel Kant remains the common point of reference for all contributions. The volume is divided into two sections. The first section is dedicated to Kant's philosophy in particular and its relationship with the philosophies of Kant's predecessors. From the perspective of the history of philosophy, interpretations of the significance of different philosophical traditions concerning Kant's thought will be given, and of the relationship of Kant's thought to the problems of reason with which Kant and his predecessors dealt. The second section is dedicated to the legacy of Kant's philosophy. The relevance of the concept of rationality for the genesis and systematics of post-Kantian ideas of rationality will be discussed, and the potential of Kant's critical philosophy - for contemporary thought as well - will be examined.
