This collection of essays explores the history of the book in pre-modern South Asia looking at the production, circulation, fruition and preservation of manuscripts in different areas and across time. Edited by the team of the Cambridge-based Sanskrit Manuscripts Project and including contributions of the researchers who collaborated with it, it covers a wide range of topics related to South Asian manuscript culture: from the material dimension (palaeography, layout, decoration) and the complicated interactions of manuscripts with printing in late medieval Tibet and in modern Tamil Nadu, to reading, writing, editing and educational practices, from manuscripts as sources for the study of religious, literary and intellectual traditions, to the creation of collections in medieval India and Cambodia (one major centre of the so-called Sanskrit cosmopolis), and the formation of the Cambridge collections in the colonial period. The contributions reflect the variety of idioms, literary genres, religious movements, and social actors (intellectuals, scribes, patrons) of ancient South Asia, as well as the variety of approaches, interests and specialisms of the authors, and their impassionate engagement with manuscripts.

This is a verse from the poem by J. Milton Hayes, about the green-eyed yellow idol, a god of the Kathinandu Valley whose all-knowing, all-seeing Eye keeps watch over this once-secret haven in the Himalayas. Kathmandu is a secret no more, but its hidden enchantment is still buried in its lanes and byways. Idols nd temples still dot the rural landscapes; some are mysterious and mystical. Others lie neglected, their owers lay dormant. The all-seeing eyes of the stupas wait and watch, wondering if the destructive Age of Kali has some or is still to come. Kathmandu a Maitreya, the Buddha of the future. The valley ringed by luxuriant forests and mountains waits, as the morning mist reveals new splendours. The gods of the majestic Himalayan peaks look down, waiting fora new dawn. This journey back in time also has stories and anecdotes about the valley since 1974, when idle hippies still lived in Kathmandu. Kathmandu waits for you. Discover the famous laces and search out its obscure treasures. The green eyed yellow idol lies in waiting, never seen, but always gazing down.

The Festivals Of Nepal written by Mary M. Anderson and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-10-30 with Social Science categories.

First Published in 1971, The Festivals of Nepal describes the most important festivals from the country, which have been arranged according to the ancient Nepalese calendar, beginning with the New Year in mid-April. The author provides, moreover, a brief introductory sketch of Nepalese geography, history, and religion, to give background to what follows. When Mary Anderson began her five year residence in Kathmandu as the wife of a diplomat, she attended the frequent Nepalese festivals up and down the Valley because they were mysterious, colourful and great fun. But soon she became more deeply absorbed in the meaning of these ancient activities as she grew quickly aware that to the Nepalese themselves the ancient processions and rituals were of great importance. Somewhere, almost every day, there seems to be in Nepal a festival of some kind, but now that this hitherto secret land has been opened up to tourists and foreign influences, much of this historic pageantry may well be lost. The modernization of Nepalese society is certain to have its effects, but when these artless celebrations become the goal of spectators from outside, they will also lose its spontaneity. Mary Anderson was determined to record as many of them as she could, explaining their mythological, religious and historical backgrounds and relating some of the wealth of legends and folk tales that surround them. This is an interesting read for students of sociology of culture, South Asian studies, South Asian religion and culture and Hindu religion.
