SERIOUS EATS: I got all misty-eyed a few times, as the significance of such a New York icon was illustrated in word and image... THE NEW YORK TIMES: A book as overstuffed as Katz's pastrami on rye. A great visual record of how a restaurant runs, this first-ever book about Katz's Delicatessen indelibly captures the unique spirit and appeal of the Lower East Side classic. Timed to coincide with Katz's 125th anniversary, this special edition brings a bit of Katz's right into your own home. Located on the corner of Ludlow and East Houston, this NYC institution opened in 1888 and is the oldest and most beloved delicatessen in America. Famous for its mouth-watering pastrami and mouth-puckering pickles (as well as its traditional Friday evening hot dogs) Katz's has been serving Jewish comfort food to generations of hungry customers, from locals dropping in for their usual and tourists from around the world, to a veritable who's-who of celebrities and politicians whose visits are immortalized in hundreds of photographs along the walls. The 384 pages of this elegant and hefty tome contain over 600 striking photographs by Baldomero Fernandez: the people on both sides of the counter; the storied cutting stations; the distinctive signa≥ the remarkably small kitchen; and more. Part-owner Jake Dell reveals the deli's rich and compelling history, and discusses traditional Jewish deli foods, including the different preparations for pastrami and corned beef. Travel Channel star Adam Richman provides a very personal and evocative foreword. What you won't discover is what the little circles on the tickets mean. Baldomero calls them hieroglyphics. What they mean and why they even use them, is still a mystery to me. That's just part of Katz's! No need to be a New Yorker. This book will prove equally irresistible to both the regulars and to the uninitiated. Published in association with Glenn Horowitz Bookseller.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 In 2007, Meir Dagan, the head of the Mossad, came to see President George W. Bush with information that Syria was building a nuclear reactor. He showed him dozens of photos, one of which showed two men posing in front of the concrete structure. One of the men was Ibrahim Othman, head of Syria’s Atomic Energy Commission. #2 Dagan showed the Americans photos of the Yongbyon nuclear reactor, which he said was built by North Korea and Syria. The Americans had believed that North Korea was the only country helping Syria build a nuclear weapon. #3 When Dagan showed photos of the nuclear reactor being built in Syria, Cheney saw clues that others had missed. The reactor was almost complete, and there were no power lines or an electrical grid nearby to provide enough power. This was a clear violation of a marker Bush had laid down after North Korea conducted its first nuclear test. #4 Israel’s intelligence capabilities were often praised by Cheney. In 1990, he had a secure phone line installed in his office that he used to directly contact Arens’s office in Tel Aviv. The two spoke almost daily as the US worked hard to keep Israel out of the war.

Book Preview: #1 In 1945, the palace was transformed into a Soviet sanatorium for favored workers needing rest, quiet, and treatment for tuberculosis. The Nazis had stolen everything, even the brass doorknobs. #2 By late 1944, British and American forces had liberated Rome, Paris, Brussels, and Athens from German and Italian occupation. The Red Army had marched westward across Poland and Romania. The three leaders were facing complicated questions about the end of the war in Europe. #3 The leaders decided that the second conference would be held in the Mediterranean, but Stalin claimed his health was too fragile to travel any further than his own country’s borders. The western leaders reluctantly agreed to meet him in the Crimea. #4 The three leaders would gather at Yalta, and the Soviets had just three weeks to turn the ransacked villas into a site fit for one of the largest and most important international summits in history.
