"There is a long and vital tradition in East Asian art of animal painting. In Japan, pictures of animals have often been imbued with human characteristics for humorous, even satirical purposes. Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-89) was a highly individualistic painter of the late Edo and early Meiji eras, his career spanning from the end of the feudal system to the beginnings of rapid modernization. His name meant 'crazy studio' and in the 1860s he developed a new genre of 'crazy pictures' (kyoga). Kyosai's works range from painstakingly detailed painted works, to spontaneous and inspired sketches dashed off while drinking prodigious amounts of sake. Many of his designs were made into popular colour prints and illustrated books. Kyosai found an important source of inspiration for his art in the example of the medieval monk-painter Toba Sojo (Kakuyu, 1053-1140), whose comic sketches of animals were thought to satirise the pretensions of the society of his time. In a similar way, Kyosai often made animals the agents for his own light-hearted commentary on the new Meiji Japan. This book illustrates seventy-two of Kyosai's most colourful and comic pictures of animals, from cats to mice, and frogs to elephants. Beautifully designed, and with three short introductory chapters on the artist and his work, and a foreword by Israel Goldman, this is a perfect introduction to the weird and wonderful animal-inhabited world of Kyosai"--Publisher's description.

Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-1889), a famous artist living on the verge of a changing world, managed to combine the very best from the East and the West, from the old times and the new ones. He put into print works of art influenced by ancient Japanese tradition and religion, present Japanese Ukiyo-e handicraft and modern Western technology, knowledge and culture. He created his very own new style of pictures, using all his training, material and hard work. Kawanabe Kyosai was criticizing the ways of the Meiji government and the fact, that after Japan ́s seclusion the Japanese didn ́t have enough time to adapt to the new circumstances and to the new cultural influences that came from the West. The Japanese were not really allowed any more to be themselves, but couldn ́t adapt and become westernized so fast. With his caricatures the artist helps his people to cope with the new situation and all the new problems arising, whilst adapting to Western civilization. His pictures enable the Japanese to look at themselves critically in a mirror from an outsider ́s point of view as well as at their own government, culture and at the new incoming Western culture and civilization.

The unknown painters of the small town of Otsu, Japan, created a painting genre versatile enough to survive for more than three centuries and appealing enough to enter into literature, theater, dance, song, and the work of mainstream artists. Gods and Goblins presents Otsu-e as a tradition that has continually reinvented itself in response to social changes and is still alive today. In the early 17th century artists in Otsu began producing inexpensive paintings to sell as souvenirs to travelers who passed through the town on the great highway known as the Tokaido, or Eastern Sea Route, which linked Kyoto and Edo (now Tokyo). These folk paintings depict gods, humans, animals, and supernatural beings in humorous and often satirical situations, and are characterized by lively, spontaneous brushstrokes and an unsophisticated charm and humor.

Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-1889), described as The Intoxicated Demon of Painting - who could paint a 50-foot theatre curtain in four hours - was a serious student of earlier styles, producing meticulous scrolls of beauties and Buddhist deities. He was also a comic artist of crazy pictures and political satires.

Japanese woodblock prints, or ukiyo-e, are the most recognizable Japanese art form. Their massive popularity has spread from Japan to be embraced by a worldwide audience. Covering the period from the beginning of the Japanese woodblock print in the 1680s until the year 1900, Japanese Woodblock Prints provides a detailed survey of all the famous ukiyo-e artists, along with over 500 full-color prints. Unlike previous examinations of this art form, Japanese Woodblock Prints includes detailed histories of the publishers of woodblock prints—who were often the driving force determining which prints, and therefore which artists, would make it into mass circulation for a chance at critical and popular success. Invaluable as a guide for ukiyo-e enthusiasts looking for detailed information about their favorite Japanese woodblock print artists and prints, it is also an ideal introduction for newcomers to the world of the woodblock print. This lavishly illustrated book will be a valued addition to the libraries of scholars, as well as the general art enthusiast.
