Keep Getting Up is the first book of its kind to be written by a black woman career public servant. Its about her 40-year journey finding her identity and meaning for her life as a youngster and as an adult, and then finding her place on the world stage as an ambitious and talented professional. In her sheltered environment her parents, her school teachers, and the community in which she grew up in Kansas failed to prepare her for the truth of the Black Experience in America. When she stepped out onto the world stage at age 17 ready to make her mark on the world, she crashed into the wall of racial discrimination that shattered her belief system and rocked her self-confidence. A few years later in seeking employment, she discovered institutional racism that circumscribed what she could do, when and how she could do it. These new realities were almost life-threatening. A setback for sure, but for only a period long enough for her to educate herself about what life in America was all about for Blacks, and the time it took to develop carefully crafted strategies to overthrow all racial barriers placed in her path. She triumphed over all obstacles to her success along her journey and rose to the top ranks in public service. This book is a must read, particularly for those who are concerned about social justice for all in America.

Sleep and Aging provides a unique and timely collection of review articles that cover the gamut of basic and clinical aspects of sleep and the abnormalities in sleep associated with aging and neurological disorders that occur during aging. From the evolutionary basis of sleep and its normal functions in processes such as learning and memory, to considerations of the roles of sleep abnormalities in neurological disorders such as depression, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, the chapters are written by experts in the field. Several chapters focus on signalling pathways involved in sleep regulation and abnormalities in sleep, including those activated by serotonin and BDNF. Basic and clinical research on insomnia, sleep apnea and other disorders of sleep, are covered thus providing students and scientists at all levels with a valuable source of information to advance their understanding of this important topic in aging, biology and medicine. The circuits in the brain involved in sleep regulation, their neurochemistry, how they are altered in disorders of sleep and current clinical treatments of various sleep disorders are reviewed. The important role of sleep disturbances in neurodegenerative disorders is described and research in this particular area is leading to a better understanding of the relationships between synaptic plasticity, neuronal degeneration and the clinical manifestations of disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and depression. This book is a must for scientists, as well as non-scientists, who are interested in the neurobiology of aging, sleep and neurodegenerative disorders.

Winner of a British Medical Association Book Award A Brain Pickings Best Science Book of the Year Early birds and night owls are born, not made. Sleep patterns may be the most obvious manifestation of the highly individualized biological clocks we inherit, but these clocks also regulate bodily functions from digestion to hormone levels to cognition. Living at odds with our internal timepieces, Till Roenneberg shows, can make us chronically sleep deprived and more likely to smoke, gain weight, feel depressed, fall ill, and fail geometry. By understanding and respecting our internal time, we can live better. “Internal Time is a cautionary tale—actually a series of 24 tales, not coincidentally. Roenneberg ranges widely from the inner workings of biological rhythms to their social implications, illuminating each scientific tutorial with an anecdote inspired by clinical research...Written with grace and good humor, Internal Time is a serious work of science incorporating the latest research in chronobiology...[A] compelling volume.” —A. Roger Ekirch, Wall Street Journal “This is a fascinating introduction to an important topic, which will appeal to anyone who wishes to delve deep into the world of chronobiology, or simply wonders why they struggle to get a good night’s sleep.” —Richard Wiseman, New Scientist

Many common health problems can be treated with simple remedies you can do at home. Even if the steps you take don't cure the problem, they can relieve symptoms and allow you to go about your daily life, or at least help you until you're able to see a doctor. Some remedies, such as changing your diet to deal with heartburn or adapting your home environment to cope with chronic pain, may seem like common sense. You may have questions about when to apply heat or cold to injuries, what helps relieve the itch of an insect bite, or whether certain herbs, vitamins or minerals are really effective against the common cold or insomnia. You'll find these answers and more in Mayo Clinic Book of Home Remedies. In situations involving your health or the health of your family, the same questions typically arise: What actions can I take that are immediate, safe and effective? When should I contact my doctor? What symptoms signal an emergency? Mayo Clinic Book of Home Remedies clearly defines these questions with regard to your health concerns and guides you to choose the appropriate and most effective response.

A deal struck in a dark place set an outlaw mage on the path to revenge. And now that it’s led to places even darker, she and everyone she knows may pay the price for her bargain in the final novel of “an unforgettable epic fantasy” trilogy (Publisher’s Weekly). Sal the Cacophony has made few friends, but many enemies. Many, many enemies. When her magic was taken from her, she cried out for revenge. And a power she never understood promised her vengeance. A deal for a bloody price was made. And now the bill has come due. In one of the last free cities of the burned-out ruin of the Scar, Sal’s many foes—old and new—have hunted down her and her few allies—willing and otherwise -- and all her plans to save them might not be enough. One last stand. One more story. One final blade to be drawn.
