Harga CPO dunia sangatlah fluktuatif akibat persaingan minyak nabati di dunia antara lain minyak bunga matahari, minyak canola, minyak kedelai, minyak jagung dan lain-lain. Harga minyak mentah dunia juga ikut mempengaruhi pergerakan harga CPO dunia. Selain itu, usaha yang dilakukan untuk mendiskriminasi minyak kelapa sawit telah memberikan dampak negatif pada pasar minyak kelapa sawit yang turut memberikan pengaruh terhadap pergerakan harga minyak kelapa sawit (CPO) dunia menjadi lebih fluktuatif. Variabel yang juga menjadi penentu harga CPO di dunia adalah variabel nilai tukar yaitu meningkatnya nilai kurs dapat meningkatkan nilai ekspor CPO. Harga CPO yang diekspor dapat meningkat dengan menurunnya nilai kurs atau terjadinya depresiasi mata uang, akibatnya berdampak pada peningkatan harga TBS kelapa sawit pada tingkat petani. Naiknya harga ekspor CPO memberikan ketidakpastian pada perubahan harga TBS pada tingkat petani. Oleh karena itu, perlu diketahui selisih harga ekspor CPO dengan harga TBS yang disebut marketing margin. Pertumbuhan rata-rata marketing margin yang rendah memberikan gambaran semakin kecilnya margin yang diperoleh perkebunan berarti tingkat spekulasi harga semakin menurun pula. Berkaitan dengan perkembangan yang ada pada pergerakan minyak kelapa sawit maka buku ini membuat kajian tentang analisis volatilitas harga CPO dunia pada keseimbangan jangka panjang dan jangka pendek. Buku ini juga mengkaji bagaimana pengaruh volatilitas harga CPO dunia dan produksi CPO Indonesia terhadap marketing margin pada jangka panjang dan jangka pendek. Selanjutnya mengkaji bagaimana volatilitas harga CPO dunia, marketing margin serta luas lahan perkebunan kelapa sawit di Indonesia dapat mempengaruhi indeks kualitas lingkungan hidup Indonesia untuk jangka pendek dan jangka panjang. Penelitian pada buku ini dapat menjadi tolok ukur dalam mengevaluasi kebijakan yang telah diaplikasikan untuk mempengaruhi serta menjaga kestabilan harga CPO dunia, melindungi berlanjutnya usaha perkebunan kelapa sawit secara swadaya dan pengembangan perkebunan kelapa sawit berbasis keberlanjutan lingkungan hidup agar citra baik minyak kelapa sawit dapat kembali di mata dunia. Hasil dari kajian ini juga dapat dijadikan sebagai sumber informasi untuk membuat formulasi kebijakan pemerintah untuk menerapkan transparansi serta mengimplementasikan prinsip konsistensi pada para pedagang pengumpul serta para pengusaha yang bertindak sebagai penampung tandan buah segar (TBS) kelapa sawit. Kemudian dari segi lingkungan, dampak kerusakan lingkungan yang disebabkan penanaman kelapa sawit sulit untuk dihindari, akan tetapi dampak ini dapat diminimalisasi melalui metode pembukaan areal perkebunan yang lebih ramah lingkungan.
