Buku ini mencoba memberikan suatu model analisis untuk meningkatkan produktivitas masyarakat miskin pedesaan dengan keniscayaan bahwa kemiskinan pedesaan merupakan fenomena yang spesifik, melalui pendekatan terhadap kelompok masyarakat miskin spesifik pedesaan yaitu kelompok masyarakat petani, masyarakat nelayan, serta masyarakat suku terasing. Kemiskinan nelayan umumnya didominasi oleh proses patronisasi punggawa-sawi, sedangkan proses kemiskinan yang dihadapi oleh petani adalah ekploitasi tengkulak dan pengijon. Adapun masyarakat suku terasing umumnya menghadapi proses kemiskinan yang diakibatkan oleh determinasi ekonomi dualistik terhadap basis ekonomi tradisional mereka. Beragamnya karakteristik, dimensi, tipe, sumber dan proses kemiskinan yang dialami oleh masyarakat miskin pedesaan, menjelaskan penyeragaman kebijakan pengentasan kemiskinan akan menyebabkan bias sasaran dan hanya menghamburkan dana publik.

This book is about the idea that transnational corporations can push these standards through their global supply chains, and in effect, pull factories, forests, and farms out of their local contexts and up to global best practices. Considered one of Mahasweta Devi s most important works, this novel, written in 1981, appeared shortly after her seminal Chotti Munda and His Arrow. The hope of liberation contained in Chotti Munda continues in this book. As the author says, Chotti Munda talked of the dream of the dispossessed tribals uniting in struggle with the equally marginalized low caste communities; while this novel shows how being landless and being born low caste is almost inevitably linked in India . Mahasweta Devi is one of India s foremost writers. The onslaught on the Bornean rain forest is a recurrent theme in the media today. Studies dealing with the island, however, have largely ignored the long-term antecedents of modern environmental changes and problems. Yet phenomena such as forest fires, logging, the decimation of animal populations, and lack of arable land are far from new, even for a sparsely populated island like Borneo. This book is the first attempt to deal with the long-term interrelation between humans and their environment in Borneo, going back to the moment when first historical information becomes available in the early seventh century. The book deals with the relationship between people and the natural environment in Southeast Borneo, based on many hitherto unused primary sources. It describes the ways in which people made a living within the wide range of environments found here, focusing on agriculture, hunting, fishing, animal husbandry, forest exploitation, and the collection of products for the market. It deals with the impact of these activities on the natural environment and attempts to explain why most areas were strikingly little affected until modern times, yet others showed clear signs of human occupation and exploitation from an early date.
