People within the Malay world hold strong but diverse opinions about the meaning of the word Melayu, which can be loosely translated as Malayness. Questions of whether the Filipinos are properly called "e;Malay"e;, or the Mon-Khmer speaking Orang Asli in Malaysia, can generate heated debates. In northern Sumatra, as in Malaya, colonial rule embraced an extravagant array of sultans, rajas, datuks and uleebalangs. In Malaya the traditional Malay elite served as a barrier to evolutionary change and survived the transition to independence, but in Sumatra a wave of violence and killing wiped out the traditional elite in 1945-46. Anthony Reid's The Blood of the People, now available in a new edition, explores the circumstances of Sumatra's sharp break with the past during what has been labelled its "social revolution." The events in northern Sumatra were among the most dramatic episodes of Indonesia's national revolution, and brought about more profound changes even than in Java, from where the revolution is normally viewed. Some ethnic groups saw the revolution as a popular, peasant-supported movement that liberated them from foreign rule. Others, though, felt victimised by a radical, levelling agenda imposed by outsiders. Java, with a relatively homogeneous population, passed through the revolution without significant social change. The ethnic complexity of Sumatra, in contrast, meant that the revolution demanded and altogether new "Indonesian" identity to override the competing ethnic categories of the past.

The stimulus for the joint venture of which the present book is the visible result was provided by the discovery of a Malay manuscript of the long lost Hikayat Patani by one of the authors, and the publication, quite independently, of a Thai version of the same text by the other. The authors, who were not acquainted with one another before this, "found" each other at the suggestion of Professor O. W. Wolters, to whom they are grateful for the idea. The preparation of the book took place on both sides of the Atlantic, with a frequent exchange of letters containing the results of the work of each author. In August, 1969, Teeuw was given the opportunity to visit Cornell University, where in a fortnight's most intensive contact and concentrated research all the drafts were checked, supplemented, rewritten and improved, and the definitive arrangement of the book decided on. The work on the manuscript was completed in the following four months, again in geographically separated spheres. The actual manuscript was rounded off at the beginning of 1970.

Buku Sejarah Nasional Indonesia (SNI) Edisi Pemutakhiran ini terbit dalam cetakan ketujuh. Sejak awal penerbitan SNI pada tahun 1975, buku SNI ini belum pernah dimutakhirkan sesuai d engan temuan-temuan baru dan perkembangan teori sejarah yang baru. Sudah hampir tiga puluh tiga tahun, banyak naskah perbaikan masih tersimpan di laci para penulis sejarah Indonesia. Keunikan pertama dari SNI adalah bahwa buku ini merupakan hasil karya bangsa Indonesia sendiri, ilmuwan/-wati Indonesia yang sebagian besar masih hidup. Keunikan kedua dari buku SNI ini adalah ditulis dengan latar belakang Indonesia atau bersifat indonesiasentris. Untuk mengetahui latar belakang penulisan buku SNI sebanyak enam jilid ini perlu dibaca Prakata Editor Umum pada edisi pertama yang ditulis oleh Prof. Dr. Sartono Kartodirdjo. Buku SNI telah mendapat julukan dari masyarakat Indonesia sebagai “buku standar” sejarah Indonesia. Oleh karena itu, isi buku SNI sering dipakai sebagai sumber rujukan penulisan dan pembicaraan tentang sejarah Indonesia, baik secara langsung dikatakan maupun secara tersirat. Balai Pustaka sebagai pemegang hak penerbitan buku SNI telah berusaha keras untuk menghidupkan kembali semangat nasional para pencetus dan penulis awal buku SNI.
