Anthropological studies of marine fishermen have explored immense diversity among fishing societies, and the management strategies of marine resources in the context of globalization and changing technologies deserve the utmost attention from researchers in an uncertain economy. In India, fishing communities belong to various different castes and religions. This book presents an anthropological study of Hindu marine fishermen in two neighboring fishing villages situated in the same coastal belt, but administered by two different state governments (Kerala and Pondicherry). It explores the ways in which state interventions influence the development paradigm of a marginalized society like marine fishermen, and discusses the distribution pattern of production systems and its significance at the household level. The book also considers the gendered forms of economic transformation in fishing due to declining marine resources, and technological and climate change. It also focuses on the role of women fish vendors in market spaces as instituted by their distribution and credit connections and the unique experiences of the development process through anxieties, compromises and survival in an uncertain economy. Fisheries management in the developing world is concerned largely with the problem of creating a commercial or industrial fishery sector. Fisheries development in India was initiated through a programme of planned technological change. The state of Kerala which is still the primary producer and exporter of marine fish from the country has been the focal point of this developmental strategy. Fisheries development in the state has not been studied in much detail in the past. This book examines the development of industrial capitalism and structural change in the marketing of fish in the fishery sector of Kerala. The state of Kerala is one of the leading maritime states of Indian Union and is blessed with excellent maritime, inland and estuarine fisheries potential. With the implementation of the Indio-Norwegian Project in 1953, by which the mechanization processes were initiated, the fishery sector in Kerala underwent great change. It introduced a sharp dualism into the fish economy of Kerala and changed the structure of fish marketing reducing the marketing power of the fish producers/sellers. Mechanization helped to increase production and productivity, however, the fishermen are only the peripheral beneficiaries of the mechanization effort. Exploitation of fishermen increased along with the progress of the fishery sector. This study focuses mainly on the internal marketing of marine fish in Kerala. It examines the price spread in three channels of fish marketing. It deals with the price setting at the landing centres and at the wholesale markets. This work critically examines the supply response to price changes for sixteen varieties of fish in Kerala and seeks to evaluate the role of institutional agencies in marine fish marketing.
