Keadaan gizi kurang tingkat berat pada masa bayi dan balita ditandai dengan dua macam sindrom yang jelas yaitu Kwashiorkor, karena kurang konsumsi protein dan Marasmus karena kurang konsumsi energi dan protein. Faktor risiko gizi kurang pada anak usia 1-5 tahun dari keluarga miskin antara lain adalah pendapatan keluarga, pengetahuan ibu, pendidikan ibu, pekerjaan ibu dan asupan makanan.
