Islam Ahlussunnah Wal Jamaah, sebagaiman yang dianut oleh Nahdlatul Ulama memegang empat prinsip utama. Pertama, tawassuth yang berarti tengah-tengah, tidak eksrim ke kiri maupun ke kanan. Kedua, tawazun yang artinya berimbang. Ketiga, i’tidal alias tegak lurus. Keempat, tasammuh yang berarti toleran. Oleh karena itu, dalam berdakwah, Nahdlatul Ulama senatiasa berpegangteguh pada firman Allah yang berbunyi : ادْعُ إِلَىٰ سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَالْمَوْعِظَةِ الْحَسَنَةِ ۖ وَجَادِلْهُم بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ Artinya: Ajaklah (manusia) kepada jalan Tuhan-mu dengan hikmah dan pelajaran yang baik dan bantahlah mereka dengan cara yang baik. Nabi Muhammad sendiri diperintah oleh Allah agar berdakwah bil hikmah, dengan penuh kearifan, dengan penuh bijak, tidak boleh kasar, tidak boleh menyakiti hati orang, serta tidak boleh menyinggung. Contoh, ketika ada orang Badui masuk islam, Nabi Muhammad memberikan pengarahan kemudian dia terima. “Semua arahan dari Anda Rasulullah, saya terima kecuali satu, saya minta izin diperbolehkan berzina, satu saja ini. Saya mau shalat, mau zakat, mau puasa, mau apa, satu saja, izinkan saya berzina.” Apa jawabnya Nabi Muhammad? Bukan “Haram”. Tapi jawabnya, “Coba kalau yang zina itu teman kamu menzinai ibumu, kalau yang zina itu tetanggamu menzinai putrimu, kalau yang zina itu teman kamu, tetanggamu menzinai istrimu, ibumu, putrimu, bagaimana kira-kira?” Dia baru tersentuh hatinya dan bersumpah tidak akan berzina lagi. Itu artinya Nabi Muhammad berhasil memasukkan dakwah bil hikmah. Tidak bil ikrah, tidak menteror, ancaman, menakut-nakuti, tidak, tapi bil hikmah. Seperti ketika Rasulullah masuk kota Makkah dengan penuh kemenangan, Rasul mengatakan “al-yaum yaumul marhamah.” Dulu orang Makkah mengusir, menyiksa, menyakiti bahkan membunuh, akan tetapi saat Rasulullah masuk kota Makkah setelah 8 tahun dengan penuh kemenangan, apa kata beliau? “Al-yaum yaumul marhamah,” hari ini hari rekonsiliasi, menyambung kembali persaudaraan, tidak ada balas dendam, semua dimaafkan. Dakwah Nabi Muhammad kemudian diteruskan oleh walisongo di tanah Nusantara. Tak ada kekerasan, peperangan, dan pertumpahan darah dalam dakwah walisongo di Nusantara. Terbukti, dengan dakwahnya, para walisongo berhasil mengislamkan begitu banyak orang. Mengislamkan, bukan mengkafirkan. Merangkul, bukan memukul. Dakwah yang demikian ini pada akhirnya dilanjutkan oleh Nahdlatul Ulama sejak awal mula berdirinya hingga saat ini. Hadirnya buku kumpulan khotbah ini diharapkan dapat menjadi acuan dan contoh bagi para segenap warga Nahdlatul Ulama pada khususnya, dan umat islam Indonesia pada umumnya, dalam menebarkan dakwah yang rahmatan lil alamin sesuai yang dianjurkan oleh Rasulullah Saw melalui mimbar-mimbar masjid dalam khotbah mereka. Semoga ada guna dan manfaatnya.
