The introduction of the single currency in the European economic space constitutes without doubt the most visible step towards monetary and economic integration in the EU. Those who boosted the birth of the Common Market in 1957 dreamt that this would one day come about as a logical consequence of the integration process. However, things have gone much more slowly than possibly imagined, although if taken in an adequate historic perspective, it is undeniable that the agreements that have led to European Monetary Union signify a really formidable jump in the process of political and economic integration in Europe. This is something many doubted would ever happen, but which is already a reality, although still in need of a period of consolidation. The most general economic consequences of the EMU have already been analysed in considerable depth. Proof of this is the literature already available. In general, there is coincidence in affirming that the balance of the results expected is clearly positive. Firstly, as a result of the anticipated gains in efficiency, a consequence of reduction of transaction costs associated to the previous existence of different currencies and of the elimination of exchange rate uncertainties.

Integration of the Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECs) into the European Union (EU) has become more a question of timing than a question whether it will or should be made. Since one of the objectives of the EU is to establish a system ensuring competition in the internal market is not distorted the question arises if the CEECs can be integrated into such a competitive system. Which rules of competition are appropriate to improve the economic integration of the CEECs and to promote at the same time the enduring transition process? The relationship between competition policy and East-West integration is the general theme of the contributions in this book. One central issue of this volume is the way of integrating the Central and East European countries into the EU and supporting their development by liberalizing trade with the EU. A second issue is the implementation of a market economy in the post-socialist countries of Eastern Europe and in particular the aspect of implementing competition rules at a time when markets are just emerging. The transformation process, on which all four CentralEast European countries, i.e. the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and the Slovak Republic, have em barked, has become the subject of numerous publications. But as yet the majority of them dealt with institutional (systematic) changes and their implications for macroeconomic developments, while changes going on in the enterprise sphere received as yet only little attention. Even the few publications dealing with mi croeconomic topics focused only on individual issues and are thus unable to give a comprehensive picture of new entrepreneurial opportunities emerging in these countries. In order to fill this gap, economists from the Czech Republic, Germany, Hun gary, Poland and Spain put forward a proposition to analyse these developments in the framework of the A.C.E. programme of the European Communities. The E.C. included the research project entitled "Entrepreneurship in CentralEast Eu ropean Countries in the Framework of Increasing East-West Economic Compati bility" into the second round of that programme.
