I needed a break. I needed “...an off-the-wall dalliance... An all-boys’ adventure in a faraway land. An adventure far away from telephones and faxes and lawyers. An adventure with an abundance of humor, serious physical exertion, and danger nominally short of life-threatening.” After a little research and a few phone calls, I decided that a climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, with four friends, via the “Tourist Route”, would fit the bill. In this book, the author tell the story of the climb—four days up, and two days down—with a humorous yet sensitive slant, describing the perils of altitude, the vicissitudes of Mother Nature, the enjoyment of multi-generational and multi-ethnic collaboration, the travails of disappointment, and the exhilaration of success. And where it suits his fancy—and does no harm to accuracy—he embellishes an observation or encounter to illuminate the pure joy of the experience. After all, it was about good fun, and the telling of it should be too.

Kilimanjaro towers above the diverse nature of East Africa, dwarfing some of the largest landliving mammals in the world. But even as the most prominent mountain of its continent, its summit stands accessible to most. While the climb requires apt preparation and is most comfortably done in good physical shape, the mountain draws in visitors both for its challenge and its charm. Situated in the centre of a national park, the journey to the mountain takes challengers through iconic, wild Africa. This book tells the mountain's tale, from its formation and through history, and provides insight into the nature at its roots and slopes. The book also provides information on some of the many routes up the mountain and guidance to tackle the climate and extreme altitude climbers will meet on their way to the summit. The author has trekked and climbed for more than 45 years, has climbed 8,000-meter peaks, and has led hundreds of clients to the summit of Kilimanjaro on his numerous visits to "The Roof of Africa."

As a single, female, African American, over-forty, divorcee, the author had an epiphany: She had better start living her life. Having lost both parents early in life, she reasoned that she had many more years behind her than left in front of her. That meant that she would embark on doing all of the things she'd ever dreamt of doing. Having never so much as camped out for longer than a day, she decided to take a trip far from the concrete confines of her urban life, and embark on a solo sojourn with Mother Nature to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, East Africa. She had no earthly idea what to expect; not even a clue of whether she could survive at an altitude of 9,000 feet, much less the height of Mount Kilimanjaro at 19,340 feet. Even so, she made the journey across the Atlantic to the top of the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Join the author on this journey as you read her first-person account, and her insight into how you, too, can make a successful trek to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.

At 5895m, Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest point and the highest freestanding mountain in the world, yet it is possible to reach its summit, Uhuru Peak, without any technical climbing ability. Those who do make it to 'the Roof of Africa' are richly rewarded, enjoying outstanding views, the unique experience of being 'on top of the world' and, of course, a tremendous sense of achievement. This practical guidebook is split into four parts and includes all the information needed to fully prepare and undertake a successful trek. The first chapter covers preparation and practicalities, offering guidance on how to choose a route and an outfitter, along with extensive information on travel, equipment, health considerations, guides and porters and ethical trekking. The second chapter tells the story of Kilimanjaro and the people, plants and wildlife of the region, presenting a fascinating insight to enrich your trip. This is followed by a description of the six main ascent routes - the Marangu, Machame, Umbwe, Lemosho, Shira and Rongai Routes, plus three summit routes, two descent routes and the circuit path which circumnavigates the mountain.
