This new introduction into Epicurus' practical ethics and politics provides an overview of Epicurus' attitudes towards political, religious and cultural traditions. Emphasising his claim that philosophy is an art of living that helps people to achieve individual happiness, the book pays special attention to Epicurus' understanding of philosophy as caring for the soul of one's own. It explains how this Epicurean self-care is connected with caring for others since a happy life requires security that can almost only be found in a community. Epicurus' practical ethics includes a special appreciation of friendship and a conception of 'politics' which indeed focuses on caring for the souls of others. It thus stands firmly in the Socratic tradition. This understanding of practical ethics contributed significantly to the fact that, despite many hostilities, at least practical ethical aspects of Epicurus' teachings were still discussed in the Greco-Roman Empire and sometimes even appreciated by early Christian philosophers.

Recent years have seen a dramatic change in scholarly views of the later career of Arabic and Islamic philosophy. For much of the twentieth century, researchers tended to dismiss the value of Arabic writings on philosophy and logic after the twelfth century, often on the basis of the prejudice that handbooks, commentaries and glosses are of necessity pedantic and unoriginal. This assumption has now been abandoned. As a consequence, a vast amount of later Arabic writings on philosophy and logic, hitherto neglected, are now being studied and edited. The present work is an attempt at giving an overview of the development of Arabic logic from 1200 to 1800, identifying major themes, figures and works in this period, while taking into account regional differences within the Islamic world. It offers a corrective to Nicholas Rescher's seminal but now outdated The Development of Arabic Logic, published in 1964.

Nicholas Culpeper (1616 - 1654), is best known today for his English Physician, a comprehensive guide to the medicinal uses of native plants and herbs, the first such book published in English. Culpeper, a Puritan, was the son of a clergyman. In 1634 he spent a year at Cambridge, where he learned Greek and Latin, which enabled him to study old medical texts. He was apprenticed to an apothecary and started his formal practice in Spitalfields, London, around 1640. Culpeper supported the Parliamentary side in the English Civil War, suffering a severe chest wound in 1643. After recovering he returned to his medical practice in London, where he established a reputation as an outstanding healer. War wounds combined with overwork led to his death by exhaustion in 1654, aged 37. According to his widow, he left behind some 70 unfinished manuscripts. Astrological Judgement of Diseases from the Decumbiture of the Sick, was published posthumously. This book is the astrological companion to his better-known English Physician. In this book is the distilled experience of a very busy practitioner. The text, while newly reset, retains the spelling and punctuation of the original.
