Until this book was published in 1974, many of the letters in this book between Charles I Prince Rupert his nephew and the leading Royalist commander had never been published. From a mainly private collection, the letters give a fascinating insight into the stormy relationship between the monarch and his nephew. Also included are letters from the Royalist exiles, including the future King Charles II and letters to and from other notable figures of the time including Queen Henrietta Maria, Montrose and Oliver Cromwell. The period covered by the letters is the turning point of the Civil War and enables the reader to see the War through the eyes of those who participated in it. The letters have been edited in such a way as to illuminate to the full the personalities of their writers and the appropriate historical and personal context to the letters.

Charles ascended to the English throne in 1625 following the death of his father, King James I. In the first year of his reign, Charles offended his Protestant subjects by marrying Henrietta Maria, a Catholic French princess. He later responded to political opposition to his rule by dissolving Parliament on several occasions and in 1629 decided to rule entirely without Parliament. In 1642, the bitter struggle between king and Parliament for supremacy led to the outbreak of the first English civil war. The Parliamentarians were led by Oliver Cromwell, whose formidable Ironsides force won an important victory against the king's Royalist forces at Marston Moor in 1644 and at Naseby in 1645. In London, King Charles I is beheaded for treason on January 30, 1649.

A detailed and atmospheric study of the decisive battle of the First English Civil War: Naseby 1645. Ideal for readers of John Barratt, Peter Ackroyd and Christopher Hibbert, and for everyone interested in military history and the English Civil Wars. On 14 June 1645 General Sir Thomas Fairfax led his New Model Army to victory over King Charles I at the Battle of Naseby. His triumph won the First English Civil War for Parliament and signalled the end of the Royalist Army's hopes of military victory. In this book Brigadier Peter Young provides a complete account of the course of the battle and of the campaign which preceded it. He conjures up in telling detail the dramatic atmosphere of the early summer of 1645, when the fate of England hung in the balance; and in reconstructing the course of the battle moment by moment he brings to bear his own unique experience and understanding of military realities. In addition, valuable first-hand accounts reveal how the fighting unfolded on the field of Naseby during one of the most crucial battles in British military history. This highly readable book is part of a series on battles which became turning points in history and is a must-have volume for every military historian.
