Shakespeare at his best - King Lear was written at Shakespeare's most prolific period, a time in which he rapidly composed Hamlest, Othello, and Macbeth. I believe, without a moments hesitation, that King Lear is his greatest work, and probably the greatest play ever written. The plot moves quickly with excitement and action. The central themes of the play (among which are abandonment, unconditional love, and self-realization) are some of the most serious and important aspects of human nature. The play brings up many important quiestions: Why should we forgive others? Can we ever trust someone? All of these areanswered in this play. I recently saw a professional production of the play, and found myself quickly moving from emotions of fear, to laughing, to wrath, and at the climactic end of the play, breaking down into tears, having been drained by the plays rapid motion and tension. This play will live with you forever.

King Lear is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare. It depicts the gradual descent into madness of the title character, after he disposes of his kingdom giving bequests to two of his three daughters based on their flattery of him, bringing tragic consequences for all. Derived from the legend of Leir of Britain, a mythological pre-Roman Celtic king, the play has been widely adapted for the stage and motion pictures, with the title role coveted by many of the world's most accomplished actors. The first attribution to Shakespeare of this play, originally drafted in 1605 or 1606 at the latest with its first known performance on St. Stephen's Day in 1606, was a 1608 publication in a quarto of uncertain provenance; it may be an early draft or simply reflect the first performance text. The Tragedy of King Lear, a more theatrical revision, was included in the 1623 First Folio. Modern editors usually conflate the two, though some insist that each version has its own individual integrity that should be preserved. After the English Restoration, the play was often revised with a happy, non-tragic ending for audiences who disliked its dark and depressing tone, but since the 19th century Shakespeare's original version has been regarded as one of his supreme achievements. The tragedy is particularly noted for its probing observations on the nature of human suffering and kinship. George Bernard Shaw wrote, "No man will ever write a better tragedy than Lear."

Excerpt from King Lear: With an Introduction and Notes For the bald outline of the main plot of his Play Shakespeare may have gone to any one of many sources; for the story in a rough shape is told, among others, by Geoffrey of Monmouth, by La amon, by Robert of Gloucester, by Spenser, by Holirl'fied. In the opinion of some modern editors it is to the last that we must look as the most likely original, but it seems more probable that, as Furness suggests, the direct source was the Chronicle History of King Leir dramatized, according to Malone and Halliwell, in 1593 or 1594. The underplot of Gloucester find his sons is moulded on the story in Sidney's Arcadia of the Paphlagonian unkind king, and his kind son, first related by the son, then by the blind father. SCENE I. King Lear's palace. Enter KENT, GLOUCESTER, and EDMUND KENT I thought the king had more affected the Duke of Albany than Cornwall. GLOUCESTER It did always seem so to us: but now, in the division of the kingdom, it appears not which of the dukes he values most; for equalities are so weighed, that curiosity in neither can make choice of either's moiety. KENT Is not this your son, my lord? GLOUCESTER His breeding, sir, hath been at my charge: I have so often blushed to acknowledge him, that now I am brazed to it. KENT I cannot conceive you.

Excerpt from The Chronicle History of King Leir; The Original of Shakespeare's King Lear: Edited The same significance which belongs to Henslowe's con temporary venture of Tbs Tamyings of A Sbrows, attaches to his Kings Lsars. Henslowe's [finge Lsars laid the foundation on which Shakespeare built a dozen years later the stupendous tragedy which is known by the same title. The play of 1594 was the clay out of which Shakespeare fashioned the most poignant of all his triumphs in tragic art. Excerpt from The Tragedy of King Lear The text of this edition of King [ear is based upon a collation of the First and the Second Quartos, the seven teenth century Folios, the Globe edition, the Cambridge (w. Aldis Wright) edition of 1891, and that of Delius (188 As compared with the text of the earlier editions of Hud son's Shakespeare, it is conservative. Exclusive of changes in spelling, punctuation, and stage directions, very few emen dations by eighteenth and nineteenth century editors have been adopted; and these, with every variation from the First Folio, are indicated in the textual notes. These notes are printed immediately below the text, so that a reader or stu dent may see at a glance the evidence in the case of a dis puted reading, and have some definite understanding of the reasons for those differences in the text of Shakespeare which frequently surprise and very often annoy. Such an arrange ment should be of special help in the case of a play uni versally read and very often acted, as actors and interpreters seldom agree in adhering to one text. A consideration of the more poetical, or the more dramatically effective, of two variant readings will often lead to rich results in awakening a spirit of discriminating interpretation and in developing true creative criticism. In no sense is this a textual variorum edition. The variants given are only those of importance and high authority.
